Seattle to Alaska cruise: Things to do before your cruise

Seattle to Alaska cruise: Things to do before your cruise

Seattle to Alaska cruise: Things to do before your cruise  If you're planning an Alaska cruise from Seattle, it’s tempting to arrive the day before your sailing, spend a night near the port and head straight onto your ship. But after spending a week exploring Washington State, I discovered that Seattle is much more than a convenient starting point for an Alaska cruise.    From Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market and waterfront to whale watching, mountains, beaches, temperate rainforest and national parks, there’s an incredible amount to see before or after your cruise.    I visited Seattle as part of a seven-day trip combining city sightseeing, cruise ship visits and adventures across Washington State. If you're considering adding a few days to your Alaska cruise from Seattle, here’s what I discovered.    Why combine Seattle with an Alaska cruise?  Seattle is one of the most popular departure points for Alaska cruises, and it makes an excellent starting point for a longer holiday.    The city itself is worth exploring, but its location also makes it easy to discover more of Washington State. In Seattle, you can experience coastline, mountains, wildlife, national parks and rainforest.    That means you can turn a week-long Alaska cruise into a much longer cruise and stay holiday, with time on land before or after your sailing.    For me, that was the biggest surprise of the trip. I originally thought of Seattle as somewhere to spend a night or two before an Alaska cruise. By the end of the week, I realised it could easily be a holiday destination in its own right.      Day 1: Flying from London to Seattle  My trip started at Heathrow, where I flew with Delta in Premium Select.    Having never flown Delta before, I was impressed by the additional comfort compared with economy. Premium Select offered priority check-in and boarding, a welcome drink, an amenity kit, memory foam pillow, blanket and noise-cancelling headphones.    The wider seat, additional legroom and adjustable footrest made a noticeable difference on the 12-hour flight to the US. There was also a large entertainment screen with a wide selection of films and TV series.    Food and drinks were served throughout the flight, including an evening meal, snacks and drinks, followed by pizza and dessert before landing.    Another useful benefit when you're combining a land stay with a cruise is the additional checked luggage allowance. When you're packing for an Alaska cruise, having extra space can be particularly useful because you may need everything from warm layers and waterproofs to lighter clothing for exploring Seattle.    My tip: allow time for Seattle immigration    If you're flying from the UK to Seattle, remember to allow plenty of time for arrival formalities.    Eligible travellers may also be able to use the Mobile Passport Control app to submit their passport information in advance and access a dedicated processing queue.    Once we had arrived in Seattle, we headed to our hotel for the next two nights.    The Hyatt Regency was a great base for exploring the city. It was around a 10-minute walk from Pike Place Market and close to public transport, making it easy to get around without relying on a car.      Day 2: Exploring Seattle and visiting Holland America Line's Eurodam  The second day began with a visit to Holland America Line's Eurodam.    Eurodam spends the summer season sailing from Seattle to Alaska, with itineraries visiting destinations including Juneau, Ketchikan and Sitka.    Holland America Line has a long history in Alaska, dating back to 1947, and the cruise line's experience in the region is one of the reasons it remains a popular choice for an Alaska cruise from Seattle.    What is Eurodam like?  Stepping onboard Eurodam, I immediately noticed how different it felt from some of the     Stepping onboard Eurodam, I immediately noticed how different it felt from some of the larger, newer cruise ships.    The ship has a more classic and traditional feel, with a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of places to eat, listen to music and unwind.    With space for around 2,700 guests, Eurodam felt large enough to offer plenty to do while still being easy to navigate.    We also had lunch at Pinnacle Grill, one of the ship’s speciality restaurants. As a vegetarian, I was particularly pleased with the choice available.    One of the things that stood out about Holland America Line was how much of the onboard experience is designed around the destination, particularly when sailing in Alaska. The cruise line’s Alaska Up Close programme brings the region to life through expert-led talks, cooking demonstrations, local food and opportunities to learn more about the wildlife, landscapes and culture you’ll encounter along the way.    There are also some great opportunities to experience Alaska from the ship, from spotting wildlife and dramatic scenery to sailing past glaciers. Holland America Line’s Alaska itineraries can also include experiences such as Glacier Discovery, giving guests the chance to see some of the region’s spectacular scenery up close.    Food is another part of the experience. Holland America Line’s Port to Plate programme highlights locally sourced seafood, including Alaskan seafood, giving guests the chance to enjoy produce connected to the destination they’re visiting.    For me, that was one of the biggest takeaways from sailing with Holland America Line: Alaska isn’t simply the backdrop to the cruise. The destination is brought into the experience onboard, from the food and entertainment to the expert knowledge and scenery outside your window.    Things to do in Seattle  After lunch, we headed into the city.    One of my favourite stops was Olympic Sculpture Park. Located on the Seattle waterfront, it offers views across Puget Sound, Elliott Bay, the Olympic Mountains and downtown Seattle.    From there, we walked to Seattle Aquarium, where we learned about conservation work taking place in the region, including efforts to reduce underwater noise and protect local whale populations.    In the evening, we headed to Smith Tower.    Seattle's oldest skyscraper combines history with panoramic city views, making it a great option if you want to see the city from above while enjoying a drink.    We finished the day at Ivar's Acres of Clams on the waterfront. The restaurant is well known for its seafood and clam chowder, making it a fitting place to end our first full day in Seattle.      Day 3: Star Princess, Pike Place Market and Boeing  We started the morning at one of Seattle's most recognisable attractions: the Original Starbucks.    The store can get busy, so arriving early helped us avoid the queues.    From there, we headed to Pike Place Market, one of Seattle's most famous landmarks.    Established in 1907, the market is one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the US. We watched the famous fishmongers throwing fish between the stalls before exploring the market ourselves.    If you're visiting Seattle before an Alaska cruise, I'd definitely recommend making time for Pike Place Market. But Seattle is just the beginning of what makes a Princess Alaska holiday interesting.    Princess Cruises offers more than just a cruise through Alaska, with the option to combine your sailing with time in the wilderness through its Princess Wilderness Lodges and CruiseTours. These land-and-sea holidays can take you beyond the coastal ports and into Alaska's interior, with opportunities to experience destinations such as Denali National Park.    The lodges also give you a very different perspective on Alaska compared with simply visiting by ship. Instead of waking up to a view of the ocean, you can spend time surrounded by forests, mountains and Alaska's wildlife before or after your cruise.   For anyone planning an Alaska cruise, it's worth looking at the different cruise-and-land options available. A few extra days in Alaska's interior can turn a cruise into a much bigger holiday experience.      Star Princess from Seattle  Our next stop was another cruise ship: Princess Cruises' Star Princess.    One of the newest and largest ships in the Princess fleet, Star Princess also sails from Seattle during the summer season, with itineraries visiting destinations such as Juneau, Victoria and Skagway.    We had the opportunity to see some of the Sanctuary suites and visit the adults-only Sanctuary Club.    The area includes a private pool, bar and buffet, along with cabanas available to hire.    The highlight of my visit was lunch at Umai Teppanyaki, one of the ship's speciality restaurants. The food was excellent, but our chef and host Victor made the experience particularly memorable.    If you're looking for an Alaska cruise where the ship is an important part of the holiday, Star Princess is definitely one to consider.    Boeing Future of Flight  After leaving Seattle, we travelled to Everett to visit Boeing's Future of Flight.    We toured the Boeing assembly building and saw aircraft at different stages of production.    I'm not usually someone who would automatically put an aviation museum on my holiday itinerary, but I found the experience fascinating. If you're interested in aircraft or engineering, it's well worth adding to your Seattle itinerary.    Day 4: Whale watching from Seattle  Whale watching was the part of the trip I was looking forward to most.    We travelled to Edmonds, a coastal town around 30 minutes from Seattle, where we boarded the Puget Sound Express.    The boat is designed specifically for wildlife viewing, with outdoor seating, viewing decks and an indoor cabin. There are also naturalist presentations and route tracking throughout the trip.    We were incredibly lucky with the wildlife we saw, including killer whales and grey whales, as well as a variety of birdlife.    Seeing the whales in their natural environment was one of the highlights of my entire week.    Should you go whale watching before an Alaska cruise?  Absolutely.    If you're spending several days in Seattle before your cruise, a whale watching excursion is a fantastic way to experience the region's wildlife before heading north to Alaska.    It's also a good reminder that you don't have to wait until your cruise reaches Alaska to experience incredible wildlife.    Day 4: Seattle to Olympic National Park  After whale watching, we took a local ferry to Kingston before continuing towards Port Angeles, the gateway to Olympic National Park.    We stayed at Olympic Lodge, which made a comfortable base for exploring the area.    The hotel had a cosy, rustic feel, with an outdoor heated pool and comfortable spaces to relax after a busy day.      Day 5: Olympic National Park and Ruby Beach  The following morning, we headed into Olympic National Park.    Our first stop was Hurricane Ridge, a mountainous area more than 5,000 feet above sea level.    The journey itself was spectacular, but the views from Hurricane Ridge were even better. From the top, we could see across the Olympic Mountains and surrounding landscape.    We also took a short hike, giving us the chance to experience the alpine scenery at closer range.    For anyone looking to add a national park to a Seattle cruise and stay, Olympic National Park is a fantastic option.    Ruby Beach  Next, we headed towards Ruby Beach on the Pacific coast.    The landscape couldn't have been more different from Hurricane Ridge. Instead of mountains, we were surrounded by driftwood, tide pools and rugged coastline.    It was one of those places where you can simply stop and take in the scenery.   That contrast is what makes Washington State so impressive. Within a single day, you can experience mountains and Pacific coastline.    We spent the night at Lake Quinault Lodge, where I was lucky enough to have a room overlooking the lake.    Day 6: Olympic National Park rainforest and Tacoma  Our final morning in the Olympic National Park area took us into the rainforest.    Our local guide showed us around the forest, including an area nicknamed the Valley of Giants because of its huge trees.    What surprised me most was just how dramatically the landscape had changed. In less than 24 hours, we'd experienced mountains, beaches and rainforest.    From there, we headed back towards Seattle, stopping in Tacoma.    Things to do in Tacoma  One of our stops was LeMay – America's Car Museum, home to a huge collection of cars spanning more than a century.    Even if you're not a dedicated car enthusiast, it's an interesting way to spend a few hours.    We then checked into Hotel Murano, which was unlike anywhere else I'd stayed during the trip.    The hotel combines accommodation with art, with different exhibits throughout the building.    Tacoma also has strong connections to glass artist Dale Chihuly, whose influence can be seen throughout the city.    Day 7: Mount Rainier and flying home  Our final day was another big one.    We travelled to Mount Rainier National Park, home to Mount Rainier, an active volcano and the highest peak in Washington State.    We headed towards Paradise, one of the most popular areas of the national park, where we met our guide for a short hike.    The goal was to see the snow-capped summit, but I had another item on my wildlife wish list: a bear.    Our guide warned us that sightings weren't guaranteed, but incredibly, we managed to see two.    After an already incredible week exploring Washington State, it felt like the perfect way to finish the trip.      Flying home from Seattle  It was then time to head back to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and begin the journey home.    I flew Virgin Atlantic Upper Class and found the experience a great way to finish the trip.    Before boarding, we used the Delta Sky Club at the airport, where we could relax, enjoy food and drinks and make use of the facilities.    Onboard, we were welcomed with drinks and nibbles before enjoying a three-course meal.    One of the features I particularly liked was the choice between being woken for a full breakfast before landing or having a quicker express breakfast closer to arrival.    There was also a self-service snack and drinks area called the Wander Wall, located in the galley for Upper Class passengers.    The seat converted into a fully flat bed, and pyjamas were provided for the overnight flight.    After dinner, I got changed, settled in and managed to get some sleep. I opted for the express breakfast before landing and arrived back at Heathrow feeling much more refreshed than I expected.    Is Seattle worth adding to an Alaska cruise?  After this trip, my answer is definitely yes.    If you're booking an Alaska cruise from Seattle, I'd strongly recommend considering a few extra nights before or after your sailing rather than treating Seattle as simply a place to board your ship.    You could spend a couple of days exploring Seattle itself, visiting Pike Place Market, the waterfront and the city's attractions. If you have longer, you can venture further into Washington State for whale watching, national parks, mountains, beaches and rainforest.    For me, that was the biggest takeaway from the trip.    An Alaska cruise is an incredible holiday in its own right, but adding a Seattle cruise and stay gives you the opportunity to experience even more of the landscapes and wildlife that make the Pacific Northwest so special.    My top things to do before an Alaska cruise from Seattle    If you're short on time, these would be my priorities:  Explore Pike Place Market – one of Seattle's most famous landmarks and a great introduction to the city. Go whale watching – one of the highlights of my entire trip. Visit Olympic National Park – particularly Hurricane Ridge and Ruby Beach. See Mount Rainier – a spectacular addition for anyone who loves nature and hiking. Explore Seattle's waterfront – including Olympic Sculpture Park and Seattle Aquarium. Take a longer cruise and stay – if you have the time, Washington State is well worth exploring beyond Seattle.    Ready to add Seattle to your Alaska cruise?  Seattle is one of the best starting points for an Alaska cruise, but there's no reason your holiday has to begin and end at the cruise terminal.    Whether you want a short city break before sailing or a longer Washington State adventure, combining a Seattle stay with an Alaska cruise can turn an already memorable holiday into an even bigger experience.    And after spending a week exploring the area myself, I'd highly recommend giving yourself more time than just one night.

Alcoholic drinks, specialty coffees and premium beverages are an additional expense unless prepaid through a bar tab. Winding down in your cabin for the night can mean ordering food though ship eats but while all restaurants on board are free, you might have to pay a delivery fee unless you are ordering specialty items that meets the minimum delivery fee, this can mean adding a 5 dollar coffee to avoid paying to have food delivered. Shore excursions are also optional and it varies by destination or activity, you can review your cruise itinerary for a better understanding of the shore excursions available. Spa treatments, the thermal suites, tattoos studios, onboard boutiques, professional photography, casino gaming and specialty items on the ” treat yourself” menus like the sea food tower, tomahawk steak and truffles are not included . While these extras are fully optional, planning ahead can help you tailor your cruise to suit your preferences.     Virgin Voyages Cruise Deals

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins View Balcony Cruise Deals A cruise ship cabin is an important factor of your sailing, whether you’re a serial suite booker or a lover of inside staterooms. There are many staterooms to choose from when it comes to booking your cruise, but which are the most unusual? Here are 11 of our favourite places to rest your head which are a little out of the ordinary. Zipline Balcony Oasis of the Seas Featured in Balcony cabins which overlook the Boardwalk neighbourhood on-board Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, passengers not only get to stay in the industry’s first in-facing balconies but also gain fantastic views of the zipline as fellow cruisers fly nine decks above them! AquaTheater Suite Oasis-Class ships Only available on the Oasis Class ships the AquaTheater Suites offer up to eight guests a large space to unwind. Their key feature, and the reason they are named ‘AquaTheater Suites’, is that they boasts a huge wraparound balcony with views to the AquaTheater and surroundings. MSC Zoe Fleetwide MSC Cruises’ latest addition of Zoe is the first-of-its-kind. Featured in all cabins aboard MSC Bellissima, and soon to be fleetwide, the assistant is able to answer hundreds of questions about life on-board, help with excursion and restaurant reservations, as well as answering a huge range of unique customer queries. So far, she can answer 800 questions in seven languages and 30 different accents across the globe. But she doesn’t stop there. Her artificial intelligence means she is continually expanding her knowledge and offering a more personalised experience for passengers. She can offer instant information about cruise events, entertainment, journey updates or just playing music to get ready to. Virtual Balcony Symphony, Harmony, Spectrum, Anthem, Ovation, Quantum, Navigator, Explorer and Voyager of the Seas Featuring an 80-inch high-definition screen which spans almost floor to ceiling, Royal Caribbean’s Virtual Balconies are a unique and contemporary way to view the world outside without having to book an ocean view or balcony. The staterooms offer a real-time view of the ocean and destinations streamed from either the front or back of the ship, depending on which way your room is facing. There’s even sound added for effect, curtains and a virtual balcony rail to offer a ‘real feel’ to your inside cabin. The whole balcony can be switched off if guests wish, but it adds a great perspective on outside weather and give a new dimension to the cabin. Edge Stateroom with Infinite Balcony Edge-Class ships Offering 27% more space than staterooms on the rest of the fleet, Celebrity Cruises’ innovative Edge Staterooms with Infinite Balcony are one-of-a-kind. The unique factor is the balcony, which has a window operated from a control panel to extend the stateroom and bring the outside in. When the bi-fold doors and window is open, the space is great and really opens up your stateroom within a truly transformational setting. These staterooms are exclusively available on-board Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, and any future Edge-Class ships. Ultimate Family Suite Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas Exactly as described, this suite is the ultimate must for families wanting fun memories! Jam-packed with a huge TV, air-hockey table, LEGO wall, hot tub and even a slide that connects the upper level with the ground it’s the perfect place to hang out and enjoy each other’s company while cruising. There’s only two bedrooms, one for the parents and one for kids which sleeps four. There is also a sofa bed in the living room which sleeps two, so the total number to stay in this suite is up to eight. Ben & Jerrys ‘Sweet’ Freedom-Class ships A stateroom that includes free ice cream sounds like a dream, but it’s a reality on-board Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class ships (Independence, Liberty and Freedom of the Seas). Stateroom 6305 is Promenade Stateroom with a difference, overlooking the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop with two cows prominently displayed in the window. Aptly named the Ben & Jerry’s ‘Sweet’, the cruise line plays on the unusual view with perks such as daily complimentary ice cream for each guest; access to the Concierge Lounge; and reservations for the ice show. Within the room décor mirror bovine-themes with cow artwork, trinkets, and cow print soft furnishings for a truly unique stateroom to enjoy! Edge Villa Edge-Class ships Designed for the Edge-Class, these suites offer an exciting new category of staterooms for guests to enjoy. The unusual offering is that the Edge Villa is set across two floors, with private plunge pools and floor-to-ceiling windows as well as an expanse of 739 square feet of space! Though Celebrity Cruises aren’t the first cruise line to offer two-storey suites, the Edge Villas are styled to a contemporary level and include exclusive access to The Retreat; their own butler; a premium beverage package; unlimited speciality dining; and high-speed internet access. Sea Terrace Fleetwide Featured on-board brand-new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, all the staterooms are unique and unusual. However, the Sea Terrace stands out with its Roomy Rainshower and hand-woven terrace hammock as well as plenty other quirky features that you wouldn’t usually find in a typical balcony room. The rain showers offer a spa-like wash while the hammocks are hand-woven by artisans from Yellow Leaf – a social enterprise that fosters women’s empowerment and community transformation in rural Thailand. The stateroom features clever lighting with sensors that auto-adjust according to movements and changes between the day and night and there are PIR presence sensors which automatically switch to energy-saving mode when the cabin is empty. Lanai Stateroom Amsterdam, Zaandam, Rotterdam and Volendam ships The Lanai stateroom offers a roomy cruise experience on-board selected ships in the Holland America Line fleet. What makes these unique is the sliding door which leads directly into the walk-around Lower Promenade Deck, with instant access to reserved deck chairs to enjoy the stunning views at your leisure. Privacy is not compromised either as the glass for the sliding doors is one-way, so no one can peer into your stateroom when passing by. From virtual balconies to digital assistants, cruising offers a great range of places to stay and relax. If you’re looking for something unusual to book for your next cruise, these 11 staterooms are definitely some of our top picks! Have you stayed in any of these cruise ship cabins? A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line

A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line

A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line View Virgin Voyages Deals Virgin Voyages is the latest cruise line to make waves in the industry, bringing a fleet of ships targeted at a younger-than-typical cruise market. Emerging in early 2020 with the first ship, Scarlet Lady, and – after the delay caused by the pandemic – the cruise line has now re-emerged with a second ship in tow and two more in production. It’s clear to see that the line is set to shake up the industry with a new offering; adult-only ships intended to offer all-inclusive dining, quirky accommodations, hi-tech novelties and a wellbeing focus. In May 2022, my partner and I spent a week’s holiday on-board Valiant Lady, Scarlet Lady’s sister ship, while exploring the West Mediterranean. Read on to see what we thought of our first-time onboard Virgin Voyages. Arriving to Valiant Lady The week-long itinerary started in Barcelona, Valiant Lady’s homeport for summer 2022. Arriving to see the ship docked right in the heart of the city was certainly a sight to see. The red branding and sleekness of the ship set amongst the palm-fringed roads and blazing sunshine made for an inviting setting that I couldn’t wait to step aboard and start our holiday! The itinerary we booked was the French Daze & Ibiza Nights, with calls in Marseille, Cannes, Olbia and Ibiza. In Cannes and Ibiza, the ship docked overnight, so you had plenty of time to explore. The full itinerary was as follows: Day 1 – Departing Barcelona (6pm) Day 2 – Marseille (8am to 8pm) Day 3 – Cannes (8am through overnight) Day 4 – Cannes (leaving 2pm) Day 5 – Olbia (8am to 6pm) Day 6 – Ibiza (7pm through overnight) Day 7 – Ibiza (leaving 6pm) Day 8 – Returning to Barcelona for embarkation This was my partner’s first ocean cruise experience too, so I was looking forward to seeing what he thought of Virgin Voyages’ approach and its target market. Want to sail this itinerary? Take a look at our latest Mediterranean Virgin Voyages deals online here! What were the health and safety protocols for Valiant Lady? Previous to embarkation, Virgin Voyages ask you to complete your check-in and health questionnaire in their app, as well as COVID test within 72 hours of boarding. This was straightforward and easy to follow, ending with an option in the app to select your embarkation time to help ease the flow of the crowd. Ours was 3pm, so we had a bit of time after flying into the city to relax before stepping aboard. You can drop off your luggage beforehand at the terminal so you aren’t taking it with you as well and the crew will take this to your cabin ready for you. What is The Band with Virgin Voyages? Once you’re ready to embark, your test result confirmation and passports are checked, and you’re given the Band – a bracelet device which is your go-to for purchases made on-board, checking out and back in on the ship, as well as unlocking your stateroom. This is an adjustable bracelet that you can wear round-the-clock, including in the pool and shower. It’s very handy for scanning into your room and ordering drinks without rummaging for your key card all the time too! From the moment you’re on-board, you can get straight into holiday mode. A champagne sail-away out of Barcelona started what seemed to be shaping up to be a memorable sailing. Settling into the Sea Terrace We headed to our cabin to freshen up and settle in before the evening. Our luggage was ready for us when we arrived at the cabin after dropping it off earlier. We were staying in a Sea Terrace for our time on-board, which is Virgin’s version of a Balcony. The lights flicked on automatically upon the door opening and our curtains were open to bring in the sun from our terrace. Since the launch and during the development of their additional ships, Virgin Voyages have reviewed its cabin décor and design to bring a modern take on a traditional cruise accommodation. What’s included in the Sea Terrace with Virgin Voyages? As you enter your Sea Terrace, there’s an open wardrobe for hanging items, as well as above storage and a closed unit with drawers, a safe and towels. The opposite is your bathroom with a roomy shower featuring two shower heads including a rainfall type. In here, there’s a large mirror with lights on either end, storage space beside and below the sink as well as rails and hooks to hang your towels and clothes. In the main area of the cabin, you can find a desk equipped with a lamp and a tablet – this is your control for the TV, curtains and lighting. There’s also a mirror above the desk as well as plenty of plugs so it’s ideal for getting ready! Below the desk sits your complimentary water, a bin, a small stool and a mini-fridge. A full-length mirror sits in the corner as well as a chair, while the full-size bed is beside the balcony window. Each side had a small hard surface where you could rest a drink or your phone, with one side being able to pull away from the bed and move around the room. Our suitcases also fit easily underneath to tidy them away. On the terrace, there were two chairs and a small table as well as a hand-woven hammock which stretched out long enough to lie down in! Amenities include plenty of towels including facecloths, hand towels, a shower mat and bath sheets. In the bathroom, there’s a small bar of soap, loo rolls, tissues, as well as body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the shower. The room also includes a safe, complimentary water with glasses, and a range of plug sockets for EU adaptors, USBs and US adaptors. I loved the cabin and its style, which was simple and modern. The cabins are classed as ‘clever cabins’ by Virgin as the lights and air conditioning automatically switch on and off when you enter or exit the room, conserving energy when not needed. The products available to use, such as the bathroom amenities, are also all created to be eco-friendly, and the hammock has been hand-woven from recycled materials. Do you get room service with Virgin Voyages? If you’re planning room service this is available 24 hours and comes with a small $5 charge, unless you order drinks then this charge is waived. This is perfect for those late-night burger cravings or movie night snacks. We ordered drinks one afternoon while getting ready and they came in quick time, wrapped in a bag which kept them secure. You just place it back outside your room to be collected by staff. Exploring Valiant Lady Outside the cabin and throughout the ship, the décor changes depending on the bar you’re in or restaurant. This gave a feel that there’s somewhere for every mood and vibe. The centre of the ship – The Roundabout – is where a spiral staircase leads to various entertainment and dining venues, as well as boutique shops, Squid Ink (the ship’s tattoo parlour), hairdressers and the casino. What food is included with your Virgin Voyages cruise? With over 20 eateries to indulge your appetite, there’s a great choice when it comes to dining from morning to evening on-board. You can pre-book your reservations for selected dining venues via the app, which I did for a few that I didn’t want to miss out on. While sailing, you can also change, cancel or add more reservations but there is a limit on how many times you can visit the same restaurant, depending on your duration. There’s also the option to walk in, which is fine if you’re a two or three, but larger groups are advised to book ahead. Walking through the ship, there was a buzz of excitement as we sailed out of Barcelona to our first port of call. The ship wasn’t at full capacity which is typically 2,700 passengers, but it was busy enough to create an atmosphere in the bars and dining venues. We didn’t struggle to find seats or tables in most places we visited and I didn’t feel like we waited long to be served or seen to by staff. Virgin Voyages Foodie Highlights I could talk about the food on-board Valiant Lady in detail as it was the best that I’ve ever had on a cruise ship. Virgin Voyages made it part of their culture to offer incredible foodie experiences that are as tasty as they are diverse, and they certainly lived up to expectations. From steakhouses and Korean BBQ to international food markets and late-night pizza, no matter your mood there’s something for every appetite. Here are a few of our favourites from our time on-board. Extra Virgin Extra Virgin offers Italian fare which is elevated to bring a five-course menu packed with traditional favourites and freshly prepared dishes. The venue has an understated Italian influence with lots of seating, neutral tones with pink and green highlights creating a relaxed venue to sit in.  Antipasto starters feature smoked mozzarella and pancetta meatballs and beef carpaccio, followed by a chef’s selection of cheeses and cooked meats. Pasta dishes and mains come next with options including pappardelle al ragu, grilled sea bass and bucatini carbonara. You can round off the meal with a selection of desserts and a choice of homemade gelatos and affogato prepared tableside as well as a chilled limoncello to toast. The Wake The Wake is the ship’s steak venue, and it offers a menu as grand as the setting. Stationed at the back of the ship with window views out to sea, the Wake serves up seafood, steak and sides aplenty while you enjoy the ambience. We tried clam chowder and roasted bone marrow to start, followed by filet mignon and New Zealand lamb chops with sides of mushrooms, creamed spinach and twice-baked potatoes, as well as tarragon salsa verde and bone marrow bearnaise. This was rounded off with an indulgent hazelnut chocolate tart. We also visited here for brunch during the cruise, which is served between 8am and 1pm. Poached shrimp, steak and eggs, brioche French toast and a range of eggs benedicts are some of the menu items available. There’s also a bottomless brunch available for $25pp with bottomless pours of selected wines, mimosas, bloody Marys, beer and cider. Razzle Dazzle Veggie-forward and bold in design, Razzle Dazzle offers vegan-friendly menus with creative surprises. The venue is bright with black and white stripes mixed with the bright red of Virgin branding. The menu continues the cheeky vibes with a ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ side, sectioning out the plant-based dishes with the meats and sweet options. Visiting for dinner, starters include mushroom ‘tartare’ accompanied with tarragon salsa verde and house-made crostini or nutty gazpacho with roasted garlic croutons. Mains featured heirloom squash ravioli and the Impossible™ burger, plus the fried chicken and pork schnitzel from the ‘naughty’ side. Staff also shared the secret menu with us when ordering, which features items not included in the typical menu including butter chicken curry and NYC strip steak. Pink Agave Mexican meets tapas, Pink Agave is a street food-inspired venue which also plays home to one of the largest Mezcal collections at sea. The venue is designed with deep blue and pink hues, brightly lit with the quirky entrance and golden colours of the tequila bottles on display. The menu is split into small, medium and large plates, the first two of which you are encouraged to share amongst your fellow dinner guests while ordering a large plate all to yourself. These include guacamole, grilled corn, seared shrimp and roasted chicken, as well as roasted duck, smoked pork and ribeye steak. Desserts included a chocolate taco and capirotada (bread pudding with rum raisins). Test Kitchen Part laboratory, part eatery, Test Kitchen marries experiential foodie delights with deliciously unique dishes for a memorable experience. Sitting right at the edge of the production line, watch chefs create and serve each of the six-course menus in great detail. The venue is inspired by Auguste Escoffier, providing an educational experience for all to enjoy. The menus rotate between two or three options, including a vegetarian option. Each menu is just a simple one word per course: corn salmon, beetroot, lamb, asparagus and strawberry; which leaves much to be imagined and adds to the surprise. I won’t go into much detail on what to expect for each course as it adds to the experience, but it was one of my favourite venues of them all! Gunbae The most sociable dining venue, Gunbae is Virgin Voyage’s answer to Korean BBQ. With guests grouped together into groups of six, the venue is great for hands-on grilling, fun and games. Circular tables keep the conversation flowing while the centrally fitted BBQ hot plate offers the chance to roast, grill and sear your food. Menu items feature crispy chicken and short ribs, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables, rice, seaweed, and noodles. Kimchi stew was a favourite of mine alongside the kalbi (marinated beef short ribs). One of the stand-out novelties of this venue is the drinking games the staff teaches you at the start. Designed to be played with a shot of soju – a popular Korean beverage – each game is a great way to break the ice and make new friends at the dinner table. The Galley If you’re not feeling like visiting a restaurant or want a quick bite before starting your day, the Galley is great and offers a wide range of options for breakfast, dinner and afternoon. There’s plenty of seating where you can access the QR code at your table. While similar to a buffet in terms of food counters each offering different dishes, that’s where the similarities end. Staff will appear to take your order at the table and bring it to you, saving you circling the food court wondering what to choose and overloading your plate! Options include a dedicated bakery and pastry shop, paninis, a burger grill, a taco shack, a sushi bar with bento boxes, a noodle bar, a soup and salad stand plus a 24-hour American diner. My favourites were the smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye and mozzarella, tomato and balsamic panini from Hot Off The Press and the French toast from the Burger Bar. The Dock House The place we revisited time and time again while on our sailing was the Dock House. The outdoor space was completely relaxed with a live guitarist most afternoons and early evenings. Situated on a low deck at the very back of the ship, the sea views and relaxed Mediterranean vibes made for a great spot for a pre-dinner drink! If you’re hungry, you can indulge in small bites from the mezze cart or grill including grilled shrimp, roasted chicken thigh and hanger steak. Deals for Virgin Voyages ships Valiant Lady from 2025-07-22 to 2027-12-23 Late Nights and Lounging aboard Valiant Lady Aside from dining – though there is a lot of it to be had – the entertainment and nightlife on-board Valiant Lady is one-of-a-kind. Immersive and interactive, enjoy modern takes on comedy, cabaret and karaoke for show-stopping entertainment to enjoy each and every night. What is the entertainment like with Virgin Voyages? Venues include the Manor which is a two-storey space with bars, a glittering entrance and a 70’s vibe. Here you can enjoy the cheeky ‘Never Sleep Alone’ for an intimate, tongue-in-cheek look at romantic relationships as well as ‘Cocktails with the Diva’ where the resident drag queen stars in a show packed with cabaret, interactive games and cocktails. The Red Room is the theatre space, which is the first-ever transformational, multi-form venue that is flexible to the show you’re seeing. During our sailing, we watched award-winning comics and the ship’s acrobatic retelling of Romeo & Juliet, ‘Duel Reality’. Other elements of entertainment include live music throughout the numerous bars on-board including a blue band, acoustic guitarist and the house band. One of the stand-out evenings for entertainment was the Scarlet Night where the entire ship is transformed into flash mobs, unexpected pop-up moments and interactive fun for all. This ended with a pool party where staff and guests are encouraged to let loose, kick off their shoes and jump into the pool – certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! For those seeking a more relaxed time, there’s also a casino where you can enjoy roulette, blackjack and poker. If you’re a shy singer who wants to enjoy a song battle with friends you can visit the Groupie for private karaoke booked exclusively for you and your fellow Sailors. The Social Club and Arcade also offer go-to spaces to relaxing with casual games like air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball and board games aplenty. The Arcade is free to use and kitted out with nostalgic games that will send you back to your childhood with a smile. If you’re thirsty or peckish, there are two bars here: The Loose Cannon and a diner where you can find alcoholic milkshakes, hot dogs, popcorn and pretzels to make it feel like you’re at the fair. What activities are there to do in the daytime on Virgin Voyages? In the daytime, activities on our Valiant Lady sailing centred around wellbeing and fitness. All group workout classes are included in your cruise fare which included sun-rise yoga, meditation, HIIT workouts and bungee classes. These can be reserved in the app so you can guarantee a spot on the fitness you don’t want to miss out on! There’s also a state-of-the-art gym available to use, complete with weights, rowers, treadmills and more to continue your exercise regime – or even be inspired to start a new one! Personal training sessions were available if you wanted one-on-one attention to help get started. For those seeking a more chilled day, the Redemption Spa is the place to go for massages and mud rooms, while there is also a barber, and a hair and nail salon to get you looking glam. Other activities included a basketball court with dodgeball, a jogging track, a tattoo studio – Squid Ink, two pools and multiple hot tubs around the ship, as well as quizzes, bingo, live music and numerous themed social gatherings in various settings and venues. How do you use the Virgin Voyages app? One of the ways Virgin Voyages keeps up with the digital times we now find ourselves in is through its innovative app. You can download the app before you set sail and use this to upload all the pre-embarkation information required, as well as book your dinner reservations and shore excursions. When you’re on-board, you can navigate the ship’s agenda and see what’s going on throughout your sailing, as well as check you’re account, message fellow passengers and order Ship Eats (the cruise line’s name for food and drink deliveries). Is Virgin Voyages good value for money? After seven nights sailing across the Mediterranean with Valiant Lady, I’d say it is great value for money. In addition to our cruise fare, we pre-paid for our Bar Tab which included an extra $100 for every $300 we loaded, taking our total value to $800 for all our drinks throughout the sailing. We mainly drank cocktails ranging from $9 to $14; beer which was around $8 and spirits with mixers which were about $10, so it lasted us nearly all cruise. We also spent $30 on a laundry service to get a full five days’ worth of washing cleaned and folded, as we had a short stay in Barcelona after our cruise. It was great value as it meant we had all our clothes cleaned and ready to wear again. What is included with Virgin Voyages? The food is the best I’ve had compared to any other cruise line and with over 20 eateries alone to choose from, that’s an incredible value already! As for drinks, soft drinks, water, teas and coffees, plus non-pressed juices are available for no additional fee. On-board activities include the use of the gym, fitness classes (only group sessions), and access to the Athletic Club complete with a training zone where you can enjoy outdoor yoga, a boxing ring, a jogging track and a well-being pool. For the evening, enjoy nightly entertainment at your leisure with theatre, interactive shows and live music to pick and choose from depending on your mood. There are also some basic inclusions such as Basic Wi-Fi and gratuities on all services, even spa treatments. I felt that, for those on a budget or who aren’t into drinking too much, the cost was competitive and offered good value for what I got in return and I’d be more than happy to sail with the cruise line all over again! What isn’t included with Virgin Voyages? While there is over $600 of inclusions already covered in your cruise fare when you book a Virgin Voyages sailing, there are some things which aren’t included: Alcoholic drinks, speciality coffees and other hot drinks, smoothies and milkshakes: These aren’t included as standard and prices vary depending on what you order. You can pre-load a Bar Tab which is Virgin Voyages version of a drinks package to spend on these drinks while you sail. Spa treatments and access: These need to be purchased also, with treatments including massages and facials for that perfect bit of ‘me time’. Some fitness classes and workouts: While the group sessions are included, some classes are an added extra for you to experience Tattoo parlour: Yes, Virgin Voyages has its own tattoo studio on-board! But, if you’re planning an appointment ensure you book early as it can fill up early. Shore excursions: Exploring ashore with Virgin Voyages will cost you extra too, with these ranging from experiences such as walking tours to tailored unique packages only available with the cruise line. These can be purchased before boarding through the app. My top tips for cruising with Virgin Voyages You can take alcohol on-board to help save money – Each cabin is allowed two 750ml bottles of wine which must be in your carry-on luggage, not your checked luggage. This is great for those getting-ready drinks or evening tipples on your balcony. Pre-book your dinner reservations – Even if you’re only a small group or a couple, if there are venues you really don’t want to miss out on then I’d recommend you book as slots for popular times can go quickly. Read your ship’s agenda for the next few days as soon as you board – You can only make new bookings after boarding when you’re on the ship and certain shows or fitness classes go fast! Look out for what you like and try to book soon as you can so you don’t miss your chance. Different venues offer different cocktails – When you’re exploring the ship, some venues offer cocktails which are exclusive to them so it’s great to try them while you’re there. I highly recommend the Bees Please from the Dock House – it was one of my favourites! Pre-purchase your Bar Tab – To keep your costs in check and even gain some extra $s, pre-purchase your Bar Tab. Virgin Voyages sometimes offer between $50 and $100 extra ‘loot’ to spend for doing so and you can start spending as soon as you board.
