I’ve recently returned from a Cruise & Stay holiday of a lifetime, blending the best of city exploration with a relaxing cruise aboard Norwegian Escape – the perfect way to escape the chilly weather. For music lovers, history buffs, and foodies alike, this is a holiday you have to experience.
We stayed just off Beale Street, which is ideal for walking to local attractions or hopping in a quick Uber. Music lovers will adore Sun Studio, which offers a short but fascinating tour that gives a glimpse into the birth of rock ’n’ roll. Afterwards, unwind at the cool little bar nearby, or head to B.B. King’s for live music and a few drinks. If the weather is fine, you can sit at the outdoor tables and enjoy the tunes for free while grabbing food and drinks.
A. Schwab’s on Beale Street is a must-visit – it’s the only original business from the street’s historic era (est. 1876), perfect for picking up Memphis memorabilia at great prices. And, of course, don’t miss Beale Street BBQ – the portions are generous enough for two!
No trip to Memphis would be complete without visiting Graceland, the iconic home of Elvis Presley. Whether you’re a fan or just curious about music history, it’s a fascinating experience. We can even arrange your Graceland tickets in advance to ensure you get the day you want.
Another highlight is the Peabody Ducks Parade at the Peabody Hotel, a charming experience for both families and adults. Arrive early to secure a seat or a spot near the lift to watch the adorable procession.

After Memphis we made our way to New Orleans, staying at the iconic, staying at the Hotel Monteleone in the French Quarter is a must. This family-owned hotel is traditional and welcoming, with friendly doormen and front desk staff. Be sure to visit the Carousel Bar – a unique, busy, but worthwhile experience.
For shopping, Riverwalk offers a mix of high-street and designer brands, including Coach, Kate Spade, Skechers, and Ralph Lauren, along with food options and a mini Café du Monde.
Exploring the French Quarter by day is essential – wander the vibrant streets, admire Jackson Square, and don’t forget to try a beignet at Cafe du Monde. For a broader view of the city, the open-top bus tour gives a whistle-stop history tour with plenty of photo opportunities.
Another highlight is the Mississippi evening jazz cruise with dinner. It’s a relaxing way to enjoy live jazz while taking in the city skyline. Tickets can be booked in advance to secure the day and time you prefer.
Top Tip: If you have a Defence ID or have served in the forces, many attractions, restaurants, and even bars offer discounts – just ask!

The cruise terminal is conveniently located in the heart of New Orleans. Once onboard Norwegian Escape, there’s plenty to enjoy:
For sea days, we often skipped lunch, booked a later dinner, and enjoyed snacks at The Garden Café, including finger sandwiches, paninis, make-your-own sandwiches, and mini desserts.
Post-cruise transport can be hectic – pre-book if possible. Uber pickups aren’t allowed directly outside the terminal, so plan a short walk around the corner and a brief wait.
Every day on board offers choices – relax, explore, eat, drink, and enjoy your time at sea exactly how you like.
