A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line

A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line View Virgin Voyages Deals Virgin Voyages is the latest cruise line to make waves in the industry, bringing a fleet of ships targeted at a younger-than-typical cruise market. Emerging in early 2020 with the first ship, Scarlet Lady, and – after the delay caused by the pandemic – the cruise line has now re-emerged with a second ship in tow and two more in production. It’s clear to see that the line is set to shake up the industry with a new offering; adult-only ships intended to offer all-inclusive dining, quirky accommodations, hi-tech novelties and a wellbeing focus. In May 2022, my partner and I spent a week’s holiday on-board Valiant Lady, Scarlet Lady’s sister ship, while exploring the West Mediterranean. Read on to see what we thought of our first-time onboard Virgin Voyages. Arriving to Valiant Lady The week-long itinerary started in Barcelona, Valiant Lady’s homeport for summer 2022. Arriving to see the ship docked right in the heart of the city was certainly a sight to see. The red branding and sleekness of the ship set amongst the palm-fringed roads and blazing sunshine made for an inviting setting that I couldn’t wait to step aboard and start our holiday! The itinerary we booked was the French Daze & Ibiza Nights, with calls in Marseille, Cannes, Olbia and Ibiza. In Cannes and Ibiza, the ship docked overnight, so you had plenty of time to explore. The full itinerary was as follows: Day 1 – Departing Barcelona (6pm) Day 2 – Marseille (8am to 8pm) Day 3 – Cannes (8am through overnight) Day 4 – Cannes (leaving 2pm) Day 5 – Olbia (8am to 6pm) Day 6 – Ibiza (7pm through overnight) Day 7 – Ibiza (leaving 6pm) Day 8 – Returning to Barcelona for embarkation This was my partner’s first ocean cruise experience too, so I was looking forward to seeing what he thought of Virgin Voyages’ approach and its target market. Want to sail this itinerary? Take a look at our latest Mediterranean Virgin Voyages deals online here! What were the health and safety protocols for Valiant Lady? Previous to embarkation, Virgin Voyages ask you to complete your check-in and health questionnaire in their app, as well as COVID test within 72 hours of boarding. This was straightforward and easy to follow, ending with an option in the app to select your embarkation time to help ease the flow of the crowd. Ours was 3pm, so we had a bit of time after flying into the city to relax before stepping aboard. You can drop off your luggage beforehand at the terminal so you aren’t taking it with you as well and the crew will take this to your cabin ready for you. What is The Band with Virgin Voyages? Once you’re ready to embark, your test result confirmation and passports are checked, and you’re given the Band – a bracelet device which is your go-to for purchases made on-board, checking out and back in on the ship, as well as unlocking your stateroom. This is an adjustable bracelet that you can wear round-the-clock, including in the pool and shower. It’s very handy for scanning into your room and ordering drinks without rummaging for your key card all the time too! From the moment you’re on-board, you can get straight into holiday mode. A champagne sail-away out of Barcelona started what seemed to be shaping up to be a memorable sailing. Settling into the Sea Terrace We headed to our cabin to freshen up and settle in before the evening. Our luggage was ready for us when we arrived at the cabin after dropping it off earlier. We were staying in a Sea Terrace for our time on-board, which is Virgin’s version of a Balcony. The lights flicked on automatically upon the door opening and our curtains were open to bring in the sun from our terrace. Since the launch and during the development of their additional ships, Virgin Voyages have reviewed its cabin décor and design to bring a modern take on a traditional cruise accommodation. What’s included in the Sea Terrace with Virgin Voyages? As you enter your Sea Terrace, there’s an open wardrobe for hanging items, as well as above storage and a closed unit with drawers, a safe and towels. The opposite is your bathroom with a roomy shower featuring two shower heads including a rainfall type. In here, there’s a large mirror with lights on either end, storage space beside and below the sink as well as rails and hooks to hang your towels and clothes. In the main area of the cabin, you can find a desk equipped with a lamp and a tablet – this is your control for the TV, curtains and lighting. There’s also a mirror above the desk as well as plenty of plugs so it’s ideal for getting ready! Below the desk sits your complimentary water, a bin, a small stool and a mini-fridge. A full-length mirror sits in the corner as well as a chair, while the full-size bed is beside the balcony window. Each side had a small hard surface where you could rest a drink or your phone, with one side being able to pull away from the bed and move around the room. Our suitcases also fit easily underneath to tidy them away. On the terrace, there were two chairs and a small table as well as a hand-woven hammock which stretched out long enough to lie down in! Amenities include plenty of towels including facecloths, hand towels, a shower mat and bath sheets. In the bathroom, there’s a small bar of soap, loo rolls, tissues, as well as body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the shower. The room also includes a safe, complimentary water with glasses, and a range of plug sockets for EU adaptors, USBs and US adaptors. I loved the cabin and its style, which was simple and modern. The cabins are classed as ‘clever cabins’ by Virgin as the lights and air conditioning automatically switch on and off when you enter or exit the room, conserving energy when not needed. The products available to use, such as the bathroom amenities, are also all created to be eco-friendly, and the hammock has been hand-woven from recycled materials. Do you get room service with Virgin Voyages? If you’re planning room service this is available 24 hours and comes with a small $5 charge, unless you order drinks then this charge is waived. This is perfect for those late-night burger cravings or movie night snacks. We ordered drinks one afternoon while getting ready and they came in quick time, wrapped in a bag which kept them secure. You just place it back outside your room to be collected by staff. Exploring Valiant Lady Outside the cabin and throughout the ship, the décor changes depending on the bar you’re in or restaurant. This gave a feel that there’s somewhere for every mood and vibe. The centre of the ship – The Roundabout – is where a spiral staircase leads to various entertainment and dining venues, as well as boutique shops, Squid Ink (the ship’s tattoo parlour), hairdressers and the casino. What food is included with your Virgin Voyages cruise? With over 20 eateries to indulge your appetite, there’s a great choice when it comes to dining from morning to evening on-board. You can pre-book your reservations for selected dining venues via the app, which I did for a few that I didn’t want to miss out on. While sailing, you can also change, cancel or add more reservations but there is a limit on how many times you can visit the same restaurant, depending on your duration. There’s also the option to walk in, which is fine if you’re a two or three, but larger groups are advised to book ahead. Walking through the ship, there was a buzz of excitement as we sailed out of Barcelona to our first port of call. The ship wasn’t at full capacity which is typically 2,700 passengers, but it was busy enough to create an atmosphere in the bars and dining venues. We didn’t struggle to find seats or tables in most places we visited and I didn’t feel like we waited long to be served or seen to by staff. Virgin Voyages Foodie Highlights I could talk about the food on-board Valiant Lady in detail as it was the best that I’ve ever had on a cruise ship. Virgin Voyages made it part of their culture to offer incredible foodie experiences that are as tasty as they are diverse, and they certainly lived up to expectations. From steakhouses and Korean BBQ to international food markets and late-night pizza, no matter your mood there’s something for every appetite. Here are a few of our favourites from our time on-board. Extra Virgin Extra Virgin offers Italian fare which is elevated to bring a five-course menu packed with traditional favourites and freshly prepared dishes. The venue has an understated Italian influence with lots of seating, neutral tones with pink and green highlights creating a relaxed venue to sit in.  Antipasto starters feature smoked mozzarella and pancetta meatballs and beef carpaccio, followed by a chef’s selection of cheeses and cooked meats. Pasta dishes and mains come next with options including pappardelle al ragu, grilled sea bass and bucatini carbonara. You can round off the meal with a selection of desserts and a choice of homemade gelatos and affogato prepared tableside as well as a chilled limoncello to toast. The Wake The Wake is the ship’s steak venue, and it offers a menu as grand as the setting. Stationed at the back of the ship with window views out to sea, the Wake serves up seafood, steak and sides aplenty while you enjoy the ambience. We tried clam chowder and roasted bone marrow to start, followed by filet mignon and New Zealand lamb chops with sides of mushrooms, creamed spinach and twice-baked potatoes, as well as tarragon salsa verde and bone marrow bearnaise. This was rounded off with an indulgent hazelnut chocolate tart. We also visited here for brunch during the cruise, which is served between 8am and 1pm. Poached shrimp, steak and eggs, brioche French toast and a range of eggs benedicts are some of the menu items available. There’s also a bottomless brunch available for $25pp with bottomless pours of selected wines, mimosas, bloody Marys, beer and cider. Razzle Dazzle Veggie-forward and bold in design, Razzle Dazzle offers vegan-friendly menus with creative surprises. The venue is bright with black and white stripes mixed with the bright red of Virgin branding. The menu continues the cheeky vibes with a ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ side, sectioning out the plant-based dishes with the meats and sweet options. Visiting for dinner, starters include mushroom ‘tartare’ accompanied with tarragon salsa verde and house-made crostini or nutty gazpacho with roasted garlic croutons. Mains featured heirloom squash ravioli and the Impossible™ burger, plus the fried chicken and pork schnitzel from the ‘naughty’ side. Staff also shared the secret menu with us when ordering, which features items not included in the typical menu including butter chicken curry and NYC strip steak. Pink Agave Mexican meets tapas, Pink Agave is a street food-inspired venue which also plays home to one of the largest Mezcal collections at sea. The venue is designed with deep blue and pink hues, brightly lit with the quirky entrance and golden colours of the tequila bottles on display. The menu is split into small, medium and large plates, the first two of which you are encouraged to share amongst your fellow dinner guests while ordering a large plate all to yourself. These include guacamole, grilled corn, seared shrimp and roasted chicken, as well as roasted duck, smoked pork and ribeye steak. Desserts included a chocolate taco and capirotada (bread pudding with rum raisins). Test Kitchen Part laboratory, part eatery, Test Kitchen marries experiential foodie delights with deliciously unique dishes for a memorable experience. Sitting right at the edge of the production line, watch chefs create and serve each of the six-course menus in great detail. The venue is inspired by Auguste Escoffier, providing an educational experience for all to enjoy. The menus rotate between two or three options, including a vegetarian option. Each menu is just a simple one word per course: corn salmon, beetroot, lamb, asparagus and strawberry; which leaves much to be imagined and adds to the surprise. I won’t go into much detail on what to expect for each course as it adds to the experience, but it was one of my favourite venues of them all! Gunbae The most sociable dining venue, Gunbae is Virgin Voyage’s answer to Korean BBQ. With guests grouped together into groups of six, the venue is great for hands-on grilling, fun and games. Circular tables keep the conversation flowing while the centrally fitted BBQ hot plate offers the chance to roast, grill and sear your food. Menu items feature crispy chicken and short ribs, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables, rice, seaweed, and noodles. Kimchi stew was a favourite of mine alongside the kalbi (marinated beef short ribs). One of the stand-out novelties of this venue is the drinking games the staff teaches you at the start. Designed to be played with a shot of soju – a popular Korean beverage – each game is a great way to break the ice and make new friends at the dinner table. The Galley If you’re not feeling like visiting a restaurant or want a quick bite before starting your day, the Galley is great and offers a wide range of options for breakfast, dinner and afternoon. There’s plenty of seating where you can access the QR code at your table. While similar to a buffet in terms of food counters each offering different dishes, that’s where the similarities end. Staff will appear to take your order at the table and bring it to you, saving you circling the food court wondering what to choose and overloading your plate! Options include a dedicated bakery and pastry shop, paninis, a burger grill, a taco shack, a sushi bar with bento boxes, a noodle bar, a soup and salad stand plus a 24-hour American diner. My favourites were the smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye and mozzarella, tomato and balsamic panini from Hot Off The Press and the French toast from the Burger Bar. The Dock House The place we revisited time and time again while on our sailing was the Dock House. The outdoor space was completely relaxed with a live guitarist most afternoons and early evenings. Situated on a low deck at the very back of the ship, the sea views and relaxed Mediterranean vibes made for a great spot for a pre-dinner drink! If you’re hungry, you can indulge in small bites from the mezze cart or grill including grilled shrimp, roasted chicken thigh and hanger steak. Deals for Virgin Voyages ships Valiant Lady from 2025-07-22 to 2027-12-23 Late Nights and Lounging aboard Valiant Lady Aside from dining – though there is a lot of it to be had – the entertainment and nightlife on-board Valiant Lady is one-of-a-kind. Immersive and interactive, enjoy modern takes on comedy, cabaret and karaoke for show-stopping entertainment to enjoy each and every night. What is the entertainment like with Virgin Voyages? Venues include the Manor which is a two-storey space with bars, a glittering entrance and a 70’s vibe. Here you can enjoy the cheeky ‘Never Sleep Alone’ for an intimate, tongue-in-cheek look at romantic relationships as well as ‘Cocktails with the Diva’ where the resident drag queen stars in a show packed with cabaret, interactive games and cocktails. The Red Room is the theatre space, which is the first-ever transformational, multi-form venue that is flexible to the show you’re seeing. During our sailing, we watched award-winning comics and the ship’s acrobatic retelling of Romeo & Juliet, ‘Duel Reality’. Other elements of entertainment include live music throughout the numerous bars on-board including a blue band, acoustic guitarist and the house band. One of the stand-out evenings for entertainment was the Scarlet Night where the entire ship is transformed into flash mobs, unexpected pop-up moments and interactive fun for all. This ended with a pool party where staff and guests are encouraged to let loose, kick off their shoes and jump into the pool – certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! For those seeking a more relaxed time, there’s also a casino where you can enjoy roulette, blackjack and poker. If you’re a shy singer who wants to enjoy a song battle with friends you can visit the Groupie for private karaoke booked exclusively for you and your fellow Sailors. The Social Club and Arcade also offer go-to spaces to relaxing with casual games like air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball and board games aplenty. The Arcade is free to use and kitted out with nostalgic games that will send you back to your childhood with a smile. If you’re thirsty or peckish, there are two bars here: The Loose Cannon and a diner where you can find alcoholic milkshakes, hot dogs, popcorn and pretzels to make it feel like you’re at the fair. What activities are there to do in the daytime on Virgin Voyages? In the daytime, activities on our Valiant Lady sailing centred around wellbeing and fitness. All group workout classes are included in your cruise fare which included sun-rise yoga, meditation, HIIT workouts and bungee classes. These can be reserved in the app so you can guarantee a spot on the fitness you don’t want to miss out on! There’s also a state-of-the-art gym available to use, complete with weights, rowers, treadmills and more to continue your exercise regime – or even be inspired to start a new one! Personal training sessions were available if you wanted one-on-one attention to help get started. For those seeking a more chilled day, the Redemption Spa is the place to go for massages and mud rooms, while there is also a barber, and a hair and nail salon to get you looking glam. Other activities included a basketball court with dodgeball, a jogging track, a tattoo studio – Squid Ink, two pools and multiple hot tubs around the ship, as well as quizzes, bingo, live music and numerous themed social gatherings in various settings and venues. How do you use the Virgin Voyages app? One of the ways Virgin Voyages keeps up with the digital times we now find ourselves in is through its innovative app. You can download the app before you set sail and use this to upload all the pre-embarkation information required, as well as book your dinner reservations and shore excursions. When you’re on-board, you can navigate the ship’s agenda and see what’s going on throughout your sailing, as well as check you’re account, message fellow passengers and order Ship Eats (the cruise line’s name for food and drink deliveries). Is Virgin Voyages good value for money? After seven nights sailing across the Mediterranean with Valiant Lady, I’d say it is great value for money. In addition to our cruise fare, we pre-paid for our Bar Tab which included an extra $100 for every $300 we loaded, taking our total value to $800 for all our drinks throughout the sailing. We mainly drank cocktails ranging from $9 to $14; beer which was around $8 and spirits with mixers which were about $10, so it lasted us nearly all cruise. We also spent $30 on a laundry service to get a full five days’ worth of washing cleaned and folded, as we had a short stay in Barcelona after our cruise. It was great value as it meant we had all our clothes cleaned and ready to wear again. What is included with Virgin Voyages? The food is the best I’ve had compared to any other cruise line and with over 20 eateries alone to choose from, that’s an incredible value already! As for drinks, soft drinks, water, teas and coffees, plus non-pressed juices are available for no additional fee. On-board activities include the use of the gym, fitness classes (only group sessions), and access to the Athletic Club complete with a training zone where you can enjoy outdoor yoga, a boxing ring, a jogging track and a well-being pool. For the evening, enjoy nightly entertainment at your leisure with theatre, interactive shows and live music to pick and choose from depending on your mood. There are also some basic inclusions such as Basic Wi-Fi and gratuities on all services, even spa treatments. I felt that, for those on a budget or who aren’t into drinking too much, the cost was competitive and offered good value for what I got in return and I’d be more than happy to sail with the cruise line all over again! What isn’t included with Virgin Voyages? While there is over $600 of inclusions already covered in your cruise fare when you book a Virgin Voyages sailing, there are some things which aren’t included: Alcoholic drinks, speciality coffees and other hot drinks, smoothies and milkshakes: These aren’t included as standard and prices vary depending on what you order. You can pre-load a Bar Tab which is Virgin Voyages version of a drinks package to spend on these drinks while you sail. Spa treatments and access: These need to be purchased also, with treatments including massages and facials for that perfect bit of ‘me time’. Some fitness classes and workouts: While the group sessions are included, some classes are an added extra for you to experience Tattoo parlour: Yes, Virgin Voyages has its own tattoo studio on-board! But, if you’re planning an appointment ensure you book early as it can fill up early. Shore excursions: Exploring ashore with Virgin Voyages will cost you extra too, with these ranging from experiences such as walking tours to tailored unique packages only available with the cruise line. These can be purchased before boarding through the app. My top tips for cruising with Virgin Voyages You can take alcohol on-board to help save money – Each cabin is allowed two 750ml bottles of wine which must be in your carry-on luggage, not your checked luggage. This is great for those getting-ready drinks or evening tipples on your balcony. Pre-book your dinner reservations – Even if you’re only a small group or a couple, if there are venues you really don’t want to miss out on then I’d recommend you book as slots for popular times can go quickly. Read your ship’s agenda for the next few days as soon as you board – You can only make new bookings after boarding when you’re on the ship and certain shows or fitness classes go fast! Look out for what you like and try to book soon as you can so you don’t miss your chance. Different venues offer different cocktails – When you’re exploring the ship, some venues offer cocktails which are exclusive to them so it’s great to try them while you’re there. I highly recommend the Bees Please from the Dock House – it was one of my favourites! Pre-purchase your Bar Tab – To keep your costs in check and even gain some extra $s, pre-purchase your Bar Tab. Virgin Voyages sometimes offer between $50 and $100 extra ‘loot’ to spend for doing so and you can start spending as soon as you board. 11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins View Balcony Cruise Deals A cruise ship cabin is an important factor of your sailing, whether you’re a serial suite booker or a lover of inside staterooms. There are many staterooms to choose from when it comes to booking your cruise, but which are the most unusual? Here are 11 of our favourite places to rest your head which are a little out of the ordinary. Zipline Balcony Oasis of the Seas Featured in Balcony cabins which overlook the Boardwalk neighbourhood on-board Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, passengers not only get to stay in the industry’s first in-facing balconies but also gain fantastic views of the zipline as fellow cruisers fly nine decks above them! AquaTheater Suite Oasis-Class ships Only available on the Oasis Class ships the AquaTheater Suites offer up to eight guests a large space to unwind. Their key feature, and the reason they are named ‘AquaTheater Suites’, is that they boasts a huge wraparound balcony with views to the AquaTheater and surroundings. MSC Zoe Fleetwide MSC Cruises’ latest addition of Zoe is the first-of-its-kind. Featured in all cabins aboard MSC Bellissima, and soon to be fleetwide, the assistant is able to answer hundreds of questions about life on-board, help with excursion and restaurant reservations, as well as answering a huge range of unique customer queries. So far, she can answer 800 questions in seven languages and 30 different accents across the globe. But she doesn’t stop there. Her artificial intelligence means she is continually expanding her knowledge and offering a more personalised experience for passengers. She can offer instant information about cruise events, entertainment, journey updates or just playing music to get ready to. Virtual Balcony Symphony, Harmony, Spectrum, Anthem, Ovation, Quantum, Navigator, Explorer and Voyager of the Seas Featuring an 80-inch high-definition screen which spans almost floor to ceiling, Royal Caribbean’s Virtual Balconies are a unique and contemporary way to view the world outside without having to book an ocean view or balcony. The staterooms offer a real-time view of the ocean and destinations streamed from either the front or back of the ship, depending on which way your room is facing. There’s even sound added for effect, curtains and a virtual balcony rail to offer a ‘real feel’ to your inside cabin. The whole balcony can be switched off if guests wish, but it adds a great perspective on outside weather and give a new dimension to the cabin. Edge Stateroom with Infinite Balcony Edge-Class ships Offering 27% more space than staterooms on the rest of the fleet, Celebrity Cruises’ innovative Edge Staterooms with Infinite Balcony are one-of-a-kind. The unique factor is the balcony, which has a window operated from a control panel to extend the stateroom and bring the outside in. When the bi-fold doors and window is open, the space is great and really opens up your stateroom within a truly transformational setting. These staterooms are exclusively available on-board Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, and any future Edge-Class ships. Ultimate Family Suite Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas Exactly as described, this suite is the ultimate must for families wanting fun memories! Jam-packed with a huge TV, air-hockey table, LEGO wall, hot tub and even a slide that connects the upper level with the ground it’s the perfect place to hang out and enjoy each other’s company while cruising. There’s only two bedrooms, one for the parents and one for kids which sleeps four. There is also a sofa bed in the living room which sleeps two, so the total number to stay in this suite is up to eight. Ben & Jerrys ‘Sweet’ Freedom-Class ships A stateroom that includes free ice cream sounds like a dream, but it’s a reality on-board Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class ships (Independence, Liberty and Freedom of the Seas). Stateroom 6305 is Promenade Stateroom with a difference, overlooking the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop with two cows prominently displayed in the window. Aptly named the Ben & Jerry’s ‘Sweet’, the cruise line plays on the unusual view with perks such as daily complimentary ice cream for each guest; access to the Concierge Lounge; and reservations for the ice show. Within the room décor mirror bovine-themes with cow artwork, trinkets, and cow print soft furnishings for a truly unique stateroom to enjoy! Edge Villa Edge-Class ships Designed for the Edge-Class, these suites offer an exciting new category of staterooms for guests to enjoy. The unusual offering is that the Edge Villa is set across two floors, with private plunge pools and floor-to-ceiling windows as well as an expanse of 739 square feet of space! Though Celebrity Cruises aren’t the first cruise line to offer two-storey suites, the Edge Villas are styled to a contemporary level and include exclusive access to The Retreat; their own butler; a premium beverage package; unlimited speciality dining; and high-speed internet access. Sea Terrace Fleetwide Featured on-board brand-new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, all the staterooms are unique and unusual. However, the Sea Terrace stands out with its Roomy Rainshower and hand-woven terrace hammock as well as plenty other quirky features that you wouldn’t usually find in a typical balcony room. The rain showers offer a spa-like wash while the hammocks are hand-woven by artisans from Yellow Leaf – a social enterprise that fosters women’s empowerment and community transformation in rural Thailand. The stateroom features clever lighting with sensors that auto-adjust according to movements and changes between the day and night and there are PIR presence sensors which automatically switch to energy-saving mode when the cabin is empty. Lanai Stateroom Amsterdam, Maasdam, Rotterdam, Veendam and Volendam ships The Lanai stateroom offers a roomy cruise experience on-board selected ships in the Holland America Line fleet. What makes these unique is the sliding door which leads directly into the walk-around Lower Promenade Deck, with instant access to reserved deck chairs to enjoy the stunning views at your leisure. Privacy is not compromised either as the glass for the sliding doors is one-way, so no one can peer into your stateroom when passing by. From virtual balconies to digital assistants, cruising offers a great range of places to stay and relax. If you’re looking for something unusual to book for your next cruise, these 11 staterooms are definitely some of our top picks! Have you stayed in any of these cruise ship cabins? The Ultimate Guide To CocoCay

The Ultimate Guide To CocoCay

The Ultimate Guide To CocoCay View Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals In our ultimate guide to CocoCay we aim to answer every question about Royal Caribbean’s private island of CocoCay to help you plan your Perfect Day. We’ve gathered all the answers to common, and less common questions about CocoCay, plus have included a few exciting CocoCay secrets. So read on and get ready to enjoy your Perfect Day at CocoCay. Click to jump to a section... Getting to CocoCay Activities Price list Height restrictions Excursions Cabanas Food and drink Weather Safety Accessibility Good to know CocoCay secrets   CocoCay FAQs What is Perfect Day CocoCay? Perfect Day at CocoCay is a private island in the Bahamas which is exclusively for Royal Caribbean guests. Here you can chill out by the beautiful beaches and a huge lagoon pool, or enjoy thrilling activities like water slides or ziplining. Is CocoCay open? Yes! CocoCay is currently open. The island underwent a $200 million overhaul and reopened in May 2019. Since then, it closed for ten days due to Hurricane Dorian, but it is now open for business. What happened during the CocoCay renovation? CocoCay, formerly known as Little Stirrup Cay, underwent a $200 million makeover to add 125 acres of thrill and chill attractions. The project saw the addition of features such as the waterpark, pools, zip line and helium balloon as well as a pier to allow ships to dock without requiring tender boats. The rest of the project will see the addition of Maldives-style overwater cabanas at the South Beach side of the island, which are set to open in December 2019. How big is CocoCay? The island is less than a mile wide from west to east and less than 200 metres from north to south. In terms of walking distance, from the ship to the Arrivals Plaza is a six-minute walk. From here to the waterpark is three minutes and to the Chill Island area is five to ten minutes. Is CocoCay a man-made island? This depends on your definition of man-made. The island has always existed and was discovered along with other islands over 500 years ago. However, as it has been developed, parts of it are man-made including the pier, an artificial reef made of wrecks where the fish like to congregate and of course, things like water slides. How do you pronounce CocoCay? There is some debate over whether CocoCay is pronounced as ‘kay’ or ‘key’. The word ‘Cay’ is actually included in the name of many Caribbean islands, including private islands such as Castaway Cay, Half Moon Cay and Harvest Caye. According to the dictionary, a ‘cay’ is a small, low island, and this word is pronounced as ‘key’. In fact, Bahamian locals often pronounce ‘cay’ as ‘key’. However, more often than not, visitors and cruise line staff pronounce the ‘Cay’ in CocoCay as ‘kay’. So, either way is acceptable.>/p? Which cruises go to CocoCay? Most cruises to CocoCay depart from Florida, although it is also possible to depart from other ports including New York, Baltimore, Galveston and New Orleans. Itineraries range in length from 2 nights to 14 nights. You can also visit CocoCay on selected transatlantic sailings. Which ships go to CocoCay? The majority of the ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet will call at CocoCay. You can click here to see sailings.   Is CocoCay a tender port? Not any more. Since the pier was built in May 2019, ships can now dock at CocoCay without the need for tender boats. Can you stay at CocoCay? Currently, CocoCay is only open for day visits. However, there are some cruises with later departures which allow guests to stay on the island until late in the evening. In the future, it may be possible to stay overnight on CocoCay, but currently, it is not. CocoCay activities What is there to do at CocoCay? CocoCay Weather Bad weather is rare in CocoCay. If it is too windy, certain attractions like the tallest waterslides, the zipline and the helium balloon ride may close. If this happens, guests will receive refunds. CocoCay temperature Like the rest of the Bahamas, CocoCay experiences warm weather all year round. The temperature is highest in the summer months between June and September when it reaches up to 32 °C. In the winter the daytime temperature averages 21°C. CocoCay water temperature The sea is always a pleasant temperature for swimming on CocoCay, averaging 28°C in the summer and 22°C in the winter, making it a similar temperature to the air. Watersports, snorkelling and swimming in the sea or the pools can be enjoyed all year round. CocoCay rain Rain rarely spoils anyone’s fun at CocoCay. In the winter it hardly rains at all. Although the rainfall is heavier in the summer months, showers tend to be short-lived and offer a welcome break from the summer heat. Is CocoCay safe? CocoCay is a very safe place to visit. As the only people on the island are cruise ship passengers and staff, crime is virtually non-existent. Lockers are provided for you to store any valuables. Lifeguards There are lifeguards at every pool, on every slide and on the beach. However, parents should still keep a watchful eye on their children near the water. Sharks Snorkellers may see the occasional shark at CocoCay as there are many sharks in the Bahamas. However, there has never been a shark attack here. The water is very clear and the sharks have good eyesight so can see that humans are not food. This is very different to places like California where the water is murky and people are dressed in wetsuits and flippers so they may be mistaken for seals. Jellyfish There may be some jellyfish in the waters around CocoCay, depending on the weather. These aren’t dangerous but could give a painful sting. If you are stung, head to the first aid station or the dive shack and they will give you some alcohol to spray on it which will stop the sting. Stingrays If you take an excursion from CocoCay to Stingray City you will undoubtedly see lots of friendly stingrays. It may also be possible to spot some in the sea off the beach at CocoCay. These creatures are harmless, but if you step on one it will whip up its stinging tail. You can avoid this by shuffling your feet through the sand as you walk so that they know to move out of your way. Accessibility The improvements to CocoCay during the refurbishment have made the resort much more accessible for those with limited mobility. If you’re considering visiting CocoCay with a wheelchair, you’ll find that most of the paths are paved. However, you may then need to transfer across sand to get to certain shaded areas or to the water. CocoCay has sand wheelchairs which are available to assist with this. Oasis Lagoon, the wave pool in the Thrill Waterpark and the infinity pool at Coco Beach Club all have chair lifts. CocoCay trams There are three accessible trams which run all day  to take guests to where they need to go on the island. Although most passengers will walk, the trams offer a great option for those who can’t walk 10-15 minutes from the ship to the furthest part of the island, or who prefer not to. Island tram - Every 15 minutes this tram circles the island, calling at the Arrivals Plaza, the Up, Up & Away Balloon, Oasis Lagoon and Chill Island. From 31st January 2020, the tram will also stop at South Beach and the Coco Beach Club. Pier Tram - This runs a continuous service between the ship and the Arrivals Plaza. Coco Beach Tram - A tram dedicated to guests of Coco Beach Club will also run every 10 minutes between the ship and Coco Beach Club.   CocoCay for toddlers CocoCay is a great destination for toddlers. Parents are welcome to bring pushchairs to the island. Baby changing is available and there is plenty of shade with free beach umbrellas. Toddlers will love Splashaway Bay and Captain Jill's Galleon. Oasis Lagoon has gradual entry points just like a beach. Swimming nappies are allowed in all pools as well as on all beaches and in the sea. Toddlers are permitted to ride the Up, Up & Away Balloon when accompanied by adults and there is no charge for children under four for this experience. Good to know Here are the answers to some more commonly asked questions about CocoCay… Towels Complimentary towels are available onboard your ship and it’s recommended to bring these to the island with you and then return them to the ship. There are also two towel exchange stations on the island where you can swap your towels for fresh ones as needed. Guests who have rented cabanas will have towels at the cabana and they can leave them there on departure. Lockers Lockers are available throughout the island. You can access them using your SeaPass. Sun loungers and umbrellas Sun loungers and umbrellas are available free of charge across the island. Even on busy days there is no shortage of places to sit in the sun or in the shade. Life jackets On CocoCay, life jackets or swim vests are required for guests under a certain height when using certain slides or pools. These are available free of charge Floating beach mats Floating mats are available to hire for around $13, or come included in the cost of certain cabanas or day beds. Alternatively, you can bring your own inflatable lilo. Drinking age Guests must be 21 years old or older to drink alcohol on CocoCay. Smoking Smoking (including e-cigarettes) is only permitted in designated smoking areas on CocoCay. Wildlife Wild animals to spot on CocoCay include iguanas, small lizards, seagulls and chickens as well as marine life like turtles, barracuda, sting rays, sharks and fish. Drones Guests are not allowed to use aerial drones on CocoCay or on any of Royal Caribbean’s cruise ships. You can take a drone on the ship to use ashore outside of the main port areas, but it must be stored in your stateroom at all times. Shopping On CocoCay you’ll find a Straw Market which is a traditional Bahamian market selling straw crafts, souvenirs and gifts. The market is run by locals so your cruise card won’t be accepted here. You’ll need to bring cash in the form of US dollars or Bahamian dollars if you want to purchase anything from the Straw Market. What currency is used at CocoCay? You can use your cruise card to pay for everything on the island, with the exception of souvenirs from the Straw Market. As the market is run by locals you can only pay for items in cash. US dollars and Bahamian dollars are both accepted and have the same value ($1USD = B$1) Weddings It’s possible to get married on CocoCay whilst your cruise is docked at the island. Contact us if you'd like any more information. CocoCay Map You can download a pdf map of CocoCay here. You'll also find a paper version of the map in your stateroom the night before you arrive at CocoCay. The Royal Caribbean App is also very useful to help you find your way around the island. What can you no longer do on CocoCay? Since CocoCay was revamped in 2019, there’s so much more to do on the island. However, there are some things which are no longer available. These include: Massage – Spa services are no longer available on the island Hair braiding – It’s no longer possible to get your hair braided on CocoCay. You probably won’t have time anyway. Better to get it done somewhere like Nassau Nature trail – Before the development of Cococay, this was a popular activity, but it has been discontinued Fishing – There are no opportunities for fishing trips from CocoCay and bringing your own fishing gear is discouraged. There are better ports of call for fishing in the Bahamas Private area for suite guests – Before the development of CocoCay, guests staying in suites on the ship had their own area. Now, no enjoy a VIP experience, you can book into the Coco Beach club, regardless of your stateroom type. Lazy river – CocoCay has a water park but has never had a lazy river How long does a Perfect Day on CocoCay last? The exact timings of arrival and departure from CocoCay vary depending on the itinerary. Guests usually disembark the ship after breakfast and return in the late afternoon. Late night stays at CocoCay Royal Caribbean are offering very limited number of sailings with late night stays on CocoCay on board Navigator of the Seas. Guests can stay on the island until 10 pm and enjoy a party night with a barbecue, fireworks and lasers. Two visits to CocoCay Royal Caribbean offers a wide selection of 4-night cruises which have two stops at CocoCay. Sailing on board Navigator of the Seas from Miami or Mariner of the Seas from Orlando, these cruises have two days at CocoCay and a sea day. Enjoy twice the thrills, double chills or a day of each. Whatever you choose, you probably still won’t quite find time to do all that there is to offer! CocoCay secrets Psst! Here are a few secrets to make your time on CocoCay even more enjoyable. Don't tell anyone. Secret chicken sandwich – You won't find this item on any menu but cruisers are raving about it! Head to the Snack Shack and ask for parmesan chicken on a bun. Then, add a side of mozzarella cheese sticks and marinara sauce on top, along with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo from the salad bar. Secret ice cream sandwich – Grab two chocolate chip cookies and head to the self-serve ice-cream machine to create your own ice-cream sandwich. Avoid the queues – The best times to visit the waterpark for the shortest queue times are before 11am and after 3pm. Head to Daredevil’s Peak first, then ride it again right before you head back to the ship. Save on activities – It's advisable to pre-book all your CocoCay activities before your cruise. Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean

Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean

Your Guide to Private Islands in the Caribbean View Caribbean Cruise Deals Caribbean cruises are already considered the peak of luxury by many, but some cruise lines have amped up the wow factor with incredible private islands. These stunning islands in the sun are packed with amazing activities, gorgeous scenery and fantastic food. But best of all, access to them is exclusive to passengers of the cruise line that owns them. How many Private Islands does the Caribbean have? The 1.06 million square miles that make up the Caribbean contains over seven thousand islands. With only about a hundred of these islands being inhabited, that leaves plenty to be bought and privately owned- which is likely why the Caribbean makes up 40% of the global private island market. But which Caribbean islands have cruises?   Does Royal Caribbean have their own Private Island? Royal Caribbean is the cruise line most synonymous with Caribbean Cruises and boasts not one but two private islands in the Caribbean with each one having its own special appeal. Perfect Day at CocoCay Probably the most famous of the Cruise Line Private Islands, Royal Caribbean’s CocoCay in the Bahamas is a dream holiday destination. Adrenaline junkies will adore the Thrill Waterpark, which boasts the 135 foot tall Devil’s Peak, North America’s tallest waterslide. Those wanting to reach new heights in a more relaxed manner can take in magnificent views of the island from the Up, Up & Away helium balloon. And for complete serenity, pay a visit to Chill Island and book one of CocoCay’s floating beach Cabanas. Hunger is never an issue on CocoCay, with a beach barbeque, three snack shacks, and the delicious offerings of Captain Jack’s Bar. As if all that wasn’t enough, CocoCay also offers the largest freshwater pool in the Bahamas and the largest wave pool in the Caribbean. If a private island isn’t quite exclusive enough for you, you can also book into the ultra-exclusive Coco Beach Club.   Labadee Located on the North Coast of Haiti, Labadee is a capable rival to its Bahamas based brother. Soar over the island on the 2, 600 foot Dragon’s Breath zipline or scream with terror on the Dragon’s Tail coaster. Make sure to pay a visit to the Arawak Aqua Park, shop at the island’s own Haitian flea market, and take advantage of the amazing water-sports opportunities on the island. If you’ve ever wanted to try parasailing, now is the time! And no day at Labadee would be complete without sipping their signature beverage –  the Labadoozie. Do MSC cruises have their own private island? As of 2019, MSC cruises have been the proud owners of one of the Caribbean’s newest private islands. Ocean Cay Despite being a newcomer in the world of Cruise Line islands, Ocean Cay already offers a range of fabulous activities and attractions. Enjoy their luxurious spa with yoga and fitness classes, indulge in a wonderful frozen treat at their ice cream parlour (make sure to order your dessert in a fish-shaped cone), or swim in their saltwater lagoon. If you like to stay active abroad, you’ll love their sports zone and activities like paddle boarding, kayaking and snorkelling. Do Princess Cruises have their own private island? Whilst not technically a full island, Princess Cruises lays claim to 40 beautiful acres on the southern tip of Eleuthera. Princess Cays Princess Cays offers something for everyone, whether you want to zoom over the waves in a banana boat or peruse a quaint craft market. There are water-sports for athletic types and a beach barbeque for foodies. And you can overlook the spectacular scenery of the island from Princess Cays’ very own observation tower. However, the crowning glory of Princess Cays is the exclusive beach parties. A day at Ocean Cay is always topped off with a sensational light show from the island’s very own lighthouse. Does Norwegian Cruise Line have their own private island? Like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line has two private Caribbean islands for their passengers to enjoy. Great Stirrup Cay One of the Bahamas oldest private islands, Great Stirrup Cay is rich with amazing things to see and do. Take an eco-boat tour around the island, relax in their spa, seek thrills at their water park, or dine at their multiple restaurants. One of the starring attractions of Great Stirrup Cay is snorkelling in their impressive underwater sculpture garden. Visitors also love Great Stirrup Cay’s straw market and the yummy fare of the complimentary Abaco Taco taco bar. Harvest Caye This glorious Southern Belize island is ideal for lovers of natural beauty. Swim in the world’s second largest barrier reef and get close to incredible wildlife in their nature centre. The island also possesses a 15,000 square foot pool with a swim up bar, a saltwater lagoon and a shopping village. For a thrilling way to bask in this island’s brilliant views, take on Harvest Caye’s 3,000 foot zipline ‘The Flighthouse’. Tips for enjoying Cruise Line Private Islands You’ll undoubtedly want to make the most of your time on one of these island paradises, so we have a few tips to help you do just that. Know what’s included and what’s extra Not all of the delights of private islands are included in the cost of your cruise. Umbrellas for shade, certain eateries and water-sports can all cost extra, so make sure you know which amenities charge an additional fee before you go.  If you want to avoid paying any extra fees, consider bringing your own equipment like snorkels, beach toys and means of shade. Book in advance If you dream of relaxing in a private cabana or beach villa, you’ll need to reserve one ASAP, either whilst on-board the ship or before you even embark on your cruise. Beach umbrellas and water-sports equipment should be reserved as early as possible too. Lotion up Don’t let the excitement of a private island distract you from the cardinal rule of any holiday in the sun. Apply sun cream as often as possible to prevent your amazing day being marred by sunburn or sunstroke. Choose your spot carefully Picking a spot on the beach to set up camp requires a lot of consideration. Areas of beach nearest to where the ship docks will become chaotic and busy in moments- so catch an open air tram to a more suitable location. You should also think about how shaded you want your spot to be, and what island amenities you’d like to be nearest to. Bring insect repellent Bug bites might be the only negative of Caribbean Cruises- avoid them by regularly spraying your ankles with insect repellent. Wear Cotton One of the biggest appeals of Caribbean cruises is the glorious heat- but that heat can become stifling if you aren’t wearing a breathable material like cotton. If you’re itching to experience the wonders of one of these exquisite islands, our expert cruise concierge service has a number of Caribbean Cruise deals to make all your dreams come true!View Caribbean Cruise Deals
