Piraeus

It's no wonder that all roads lead to the fascinating and maddening metropolis of Athens. Lift your eyes 200 feet above the city to the Parthenon, its honey-color marble columns rising from a massive limestone base, and you behold architectural perfection that has not been surpassed in 2,5... A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line

A Valiant Start for Virgin Voyages: A review of life on-board this brand-new cruise line View Virgin Voyages Deals Virgin Voyages is the latest cruise line to make waves in the industry, bringing a fleet of ships targeted at a younger-than-typical cruise market. Emerging in early 2020 with the first ship, Scarlet Lady, and – after the delay caused by the pandemic – the cruise line has now re-emerged with a second ship in tow and two more in production. It’s clear to see that the line is set to shake up the industry with a new offering; adult-only ships intended to offer all-inclusive dining, quirky accommodations, hi-tech novelties and a wellbeing focus. In May 2022, my partner and I spent a week’s holiday on-board Valiant Lady, Scarlet Lady’s sister ship, while exploring the West Mediterranean. Read on to see what we thought of our first-time onboard Virgin Voyages. Arriving to Valiant Lady The week-long itinerary started in Barcelona, Valiant Lady’s homeport for summer 2022. Arriving to see the ship docked right in the heart of the city was certainly a sight to see. The red branding and sleekness of the ship set amongst the palm-fringed roads and blazing sunshine made for an inviting setting that I couldn’t wait to step aboard and start our holiday! The itinerary we booked was the French Daze & Ibiza Nights, with calls in Marseille, Cannes, Olbia and Ibiza. In Cannes and Ibiza, the ship docked overnight, so you had plenty of time to explore. The full itinerary was as follows: Day 1 – Departing Barcelona (6pm) Day 2 – Marseille (8am to 8pm) Day 3 – Cannes (8am through overnight) Day 4 – Cannes (leaving 2pm) Day 5 – Olbia (8am to 6pm) Day 6 – Ibiza (7pm through overnight) Day 7 – Ibiza (leaving 6pm) Day 8 – Returning to Barcelona for embarkation This was my partner’s first ocean cruise experience too, so I was looking forward to seeing what he thought of Virgin Voyages’ approach and its target market. Want to sail this itinerary? Take a look at our latest Mediterranean Virgin Voyages deals online here! What were the health and safety protocols for Valiant Lady? Previous to embarkation, Virgin Voyages ask you to complete your check-in and health questionnaire in their app, as well as COVID test within 72 hours of boarding. This was straightforward and easy to follow, ending with an option in the app to select your embarkation time to help ease the flow of the crowd. Ours was 3pm, so we had a bit of time after flying into the city to relax before stepping aboard. You can drop off your luggage beforehand at the terminal so you aren’t taking it with you as well and the crew will take this to your cabin ready for you. What is The Band with Virgin Voyages? Once you’re ready to embark, your test result confirmation and passports are checked, and you’re given the Band – a bracelet device which is your go-to for purchases made on-board, checking out and back in on the ship, as well as unlocking your stateroom. This is an adjustable bracelet that you can wear round-the-clock, including in the pool and shower. It’s very handy for scanning into your room and ordering drinks without rummaging for your key card all the time too! From the moment you’re on-board, you can get straight into holiday mode. A champagne sail-away out of Barcelona started what seemed to be shaping up to be a memorable sailing. Settling into the Sea Terrace We headed to our cabin to freshen up and settle in before the evening. Our luggage was ready for us when we arrived at the cabin after dropping it off earlier. We were staying in a Sea Terrace for our time on-board, which is Virgin’s version of a Balcony. The lights flicked on automatically upon the door opening and our curtains were open to bring in the sun from our terrace. Since the launch and during the development of their additional ships, Virgin Voyages have reviewed its cabin décor and design to bring a modern take on a traditional cruise accommodation. What’s included in the Sea Terrace with Virgin Voyages? As you enter your Sea Terrace, there’s an open wardrobe for hanging items, as well as above storage and a closed unit with drawers, a safe and towels. The opposite is your bathroom with a roomy shower featuring two shower heads including a rainfall type. In here, there’s a large mirror with lights on either end, storage space beside and below the sink as well as rails and hooks to hang your towels and clothes. In the main area of the cabin, you can find a desk equipped with a lamp and a tablet – this is your control for the TV, curtains and lighting. There’s also a mirror above the desk as well as plenty of plugs so it’s ideal for getting ready! Below the desk sits your complimentary water, a bin, a small stool and a mini-fridge. A full-length mirror sits in the corner as well as a chair, while the full-size bed is beside the balcony window. Each side had a small hard surface where you could rest a drink or your phone, with one side being able to pull away from the bed and move around the room. Our suitcases also fit easily underneath to tidy them away. On the terrace, there were two chairs and a small table as well as a hand-woven hammock which stretched out long enough to lie down in! Amenities include plenty of towels including facecloths, hand towels, a shower mat and bath sheets. In the bathroom, there’s a small bar of soap, loo rolls, tissues, as well as body wash, shampoo and conditioner in the shower. The room also includes a safe, complimentary water with glasses, and a range of plug sockets for EU adaptors, USBs and US adaptors. I loved the cabin and its style, which was simple and modern. The cabins are classed as ‘clever cabins’ by Virgin as the lights and air conditioning automatically switch on and off when you enter or exit the room, conserving energy when not needed. The products available to use, such as the bathroom amenities, are also all created to be eco-friendly, and the hammock has been hand-woven from recycled materials. Do you get room service with Virgin Voyages? If you’re planning room service this is available 24 hours and comes with a small $5 charge, unless you order drinks then this charge is waived. This is perfect for those late-night burger cravings or movie night snacks. We ordered drinks one afternoon while getting ready and they came in quick time, wrapped in a bag which kept them secure. You just place it back outside your room to be collected by staff. Exploring Valiant Lady Outside the cabin and throughout the ship, the décor changes depending on the bar you’re in or restaurant. This gave a feel that there’s somewhere for every mood and vibe. The centre of the ship – The Roundabout – is where a spiral staircase leads to various entertainment and dining venues, as well as boutique shops, Squid Ink (the ship’s tattoo parlour), hairdressers and the casino. What food is included with your Virgin Voyages cruise? With over 20 eateries to indulge your appetite, there’s a great choice when it comes to dining from morning to evening on-board. You can pre-book your reservations for selected dining venues via the app, which I did for a few that I didn’t want to miss out on. While sailing, you can also change, cancel or add more reservations but there is a limit on how many times you can visit the same restaurant, depending on your duration. There’s also the option to walk in, which is fine if you’re a two or three, but larger groups are advised to book ahead. Walking through the ship, there was a buzz of excitement as we sailed out of Barcelona to our first port of call. The ship wasn’t at full capacity which is typically 2,700 passengers, but it was busy enough to create an atmosphere in the bars and dining venues. We didn’t struggle to find seats or tables in most places we visited and I didn’t feel like we waited long to be served or seen to by staff. Virgin Voyages Foodie Highlights I could talk about the food on-board Valiant Lady in detail as it was the best that I’ve ever had on a cruise ship. Virgin Voyages made it part of their culture to offer incredible foodie experiences that are as tasty as they are diverse, and they certainly lived up to expectations. From steakhouses and Korean BBQ to international food markets and late-night pizza, no matter your mood there’s something for every appetite. Here are a few of our favourites from our time on-board. Extra Virgin Extra Virgin offers Italian fare which is elevated to bring a five-course menu packed with traditional favourites and freshly prepared dishes. The venue has an understated Italian influence with lots of seating, neutral tones with pink and green highlights creating a relaxed venue to sit in.  Antipasto starters feature smoked mozzarella and pancetta meatballs and beef carpaccio, followed by a chef’s selection of cheeses and cooked meats. Pasta dishes and mains come next with options including pappardelle al ragu, grilled sea bass and bucatini carbonara. You can round off the meal with a selection of desserts and a choice of homemade gelatos and affogato prepared tableside as well as a chilled limoncello to toast. The Wake The Wake is the ship’s steak venue, and it offers a menu as grand as the setting. Stationed at the back of the ship with window views out to sea, the Wake serves up seafood, steak and sides aplenty while you enjoy the ambience. We tried clam chowder and roasted bone marrow to start, followed by filet mignon and New Zealand lamb chops with sides of mushrooms, creamed spinach and twice-baked potatoes, as well as tarragon salsa verde and bone marrow bearnaise. This was rounded off with an indulgent hazelnut chocolate tart. We also visited here for brunch during the cruise, which is served between 8am and 1pm. Poached shrimp, steak and eggs, brioche French toast and a range of eggs benedicts are some of the menu items available. There’s also a bottomless brunch available for $25pp with bottomless pours of selected wines, mimosas, bloody Marys, beer and cider. Razzle Dazzle Veggie-forward and bold in design, Razzle Dazzle offers vegan-friendly menus with creative surprises. The venue is bright with black and white stripes mixed with the bright red of Virgin branding. The menu continues the cheeky vibes with a ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ side, sectioning out the plant-based dishes with the meats and sweet options. Visiting for dinner, starters include mushroom ‘tartare’ accompanied with tarragon salsa verde and house-made crostini or nutty gazpacho with roasted garlic croutons. Mains featured heirloom squash ravioli and the Impossible™ burger, plus the fried chicken and pork schnitzel from the ‘naughty’ side. Staff also shared the secret menu with us when ordering, which features items not included in the typical menu including butter chicken curry and NYC strip steak. Pink Agave Mexican meets tapas, Pink Agave is a street food-inspired venue which also plays home to one of the largest Mezcal collections at sea. The venue is designed with deep blue and pink hues, brightly lit with the quirky entrance and golden colours of the tequila bottles on display. The menu is split into small, medium and large plates, the first two of which you are encouraged to share amongst your fellow dinner guests while ordering a large plate all to yourself. These include guacamole, grilled corn, seared shrimp and roasted chicken, as well as roasted duck, smoked pork and ribeye steak. Desserts included a chocolate taco and capirotada (bread pudding with rum raisins). Test Kitchen Part laboratory, part eatery, Test Kitchen marries experiential foodie delights with deliciously unique dishes for a memorable experience. Sitting right at the edge of the production line, watch chefs create and serve each of the six-course menus in great detail. The venue is inspired by Auguste Escoffier, providing an educational experience for all to enjoy. The menus rotate between two or three options, including a vegetarian option. Each menu is just a simple one word per course: corn salmon, beetroot, lamb, asparagus and strawberry; which leaves much to be imagined and adds to the surprise. I won’t go into much detail on what to expect for each course as it adds to the experience, but it was one of my favourite venues of them all! Gunbae The most sociable dining venue, Gunbae is Virgin Voyage’s answer to Korean BBQ. With guests grouped together into groups of six, the venue is great for hands-on grilling, fun and games. Circular tables keep the conversation flowing while the centrally fitted BBQ hot plate offers the chance to roast, grill and sear your food. Menu items feature crispy chicken and short ribs, accompanied by stir-fried vegetables, rice, seaweed, and noodles. Kimchi stew was a favourite of mine alongside the kalbi (marinated beef short ribs). One of the stand-out novelties of this venue is the drinking games the staff teaches you at the start. Designed to be played with a shot of soju – a popular Korean beverage – each game is a great way to break the ice and make new friends at the dinner table. The Galley If you’re not feeling like visiting a restaurant or want a quick bite before starting your day, the Galley is great and offers a wide range of options for breakfast, dinner and afternoon. There’s plenty of seating where you can access the QR code at your table. While similar to a buffet in terms of food counters each offering different dishes, that’s where the similarities end. Staff will appear to take your order at the table and bring it to you, saving you circling the food court wondering what to choose and overloading your plate! Options include a dedicated bakery and pastry shop, paninis, a burger grill, a taco shack, a sushi bar with bento boxes, a noodle bar, a soup and salad stand plus a 24-hour American diner. My favourites were the smoked salmon and cream cheese on rye and mozzarella, tomato and balsamic panini from Hot Off The Press and the French toast from the Burger Bar. The Dock House The place we revisited time and time again while on our sailing was the Dock House. The outdoor space was completely relaxed with a live guitarist most afternoons and early evenings. Situated on a low deck at the very back of the ship, the sea views and relaxed Mediterranean vibes made for a great spot for a pre-dinner drink! If you’re hungry, you can indulge in small bites from the mezze cart or grill including grilled shrimp, roasted chicken thigh and hanger steak. Deals for Virgin Voyages ships Valiant Lady from 2025-07-22 to 2027-12-23 Late Nights and Lounging aboard Valiant Lady Aside from dining – though there is a lot of it to be had – the entertainment and nightlife on-board Valiant Lady is one-of-a-kind. Immersive and interactive, enjoy modern takes on comedy, cabaret and karaoke for show-stopping entertainment to enjoy each and every night. What is the entertainment like with Virgin Voyages? Venues include the Manor which is a two-storey space with bars, a glittering entrance and a 70’s vibe. Here you can enjoy the cheeky ‘Never Sleep Alone’ for an intimate, tongue-in-cheek look at romantic relationships as well as ‘Cocktails with the Diva’ where the resident drag queen stars in a show packed with cabaret, interactive games and cocktails. The Red Room is the theatre space, which is the first-ever transformational, multi-form venue that is flexible to the show you’re seeing. During our sailing, we watched award-winning comics and the ship’s acrobatic retelling of Romeo & Juliet, ‘Duel Reality’. Other elements of entertainment include live music throughout the numerous bars on-board including a blue band, acoustic guitarist and the house band. One of the stand-out evenings for entertainment was the Scarlet Night where the entire ship is transformed into flash mobs, unexpected pop-up moments and interactive fun for all. This ended with a pool party where staff and guests are encouraged to let loose, kick off their shoes and jump into the pool – certainly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! For those seeking a more relaxed time, there’s also a casino where you can enjoy roulette, blackjack and poker. If you’re a shy singer who wants to enjoy a song battle with friends you can visit the Groupie for private karaoke booked exclusively for you and your fellow Sailors. The Social Club and Arcade also offer go-to spaces to relaxing with casual games like air hockey, shuffleboard, foosball and board games aplenty. The Arcade is free to use and kitted out with nostalgic games that will send you back to your childhood with a smile. If you’re thirsty or peckish, there are two bars here: The Loose Cannon and a diner where you can find alcoholic milkshakes, hot dogs, popcorn and pretzels to make it feel like you’re at the fair. What activities are there to do in the daytime on Virgin Voyages? In the daytime, activities on our Valiant Lady sailing centred around wellbeing and fitness. All group workout classes are included in your cruise fare which included sun-rise yoga, meditation, HIIT workouts and bungee classes. These can be reserved in the app so you can guarantee a spot on the fitness you don’t want to miss out on! There’s also a state-of-the-art gym available to use, complete with weights, rowers, treadmills and more to continue your exercise regime – or even be inspired to start a new one! Personal training sessions were available if you wanted one-on-one attention to help get started. For those seeking a more chilled day, the Redemption Spa is the place to go for massages and mud rooms, while there is also a barber, and a hair and nail salon to get you looking glam. Other activities included a basketball court with dodgeball, a jogging track, a tattoo studio – Squid Ink, two pools and multiple hot tubs around the ship, as well as quizzes, bingo, live music and numerous themed social gatherings in various settings and venues. How do you use the Virgin Voyages app? One of the ways Virgin Voyages keeps up with the digital times we now find ourselves in is through its innovative app. You can download the app before you set sail and use this to upload all the pre-embarkation information required, as well as book your dinner reservations and shore excursions. When you’re on-board, you can navigate the ship’s agenda and see what’s going on throughout your sailing, as well as check you’re account, message fellow passengers and order Ship Eats (the cruise line’s name for food and drink deliveries). Is Virgin Voyages good value for money? After seven nights sailing across the Mediterranean with Valiant Lady, I’d say it is great value for money. In addition to our cruise fare, we pre-paid for our Bar Tab which included an extra $100 for every $300 we loaded, taking our total value to $800 for all our drinks throughout the sailing. We mainly drank cocktails ranging from $9 to $14; beer which was around $8 and spirits with mixers which were about $10, so it lasted us nearly all cruise. We also spent $30 on a laundry service to get a full five days’ worth of washing cleaned and folded, as we had a short stay in Barcelona after our cruise. It was great value as it meant we had all our clothes cleaned and ready to wear again. What is included with Virgin Voyages? The food is the best I’ve had compared to any other cruise line and with over 20 eateries alone to choose from, that’s an incredible value already! As for drinks, soft drinks, water, teas and coffees, plus non-pressed juices are available for no additional fee. On-board activities include the use of the gym, fitness classes (only group sessions), and access to the Athletic Club complete with a training zone where you can enjoy outdoor yoga, a boxing ring, a jogging track and a well-being pool. For the evening, enjoy nightly entertainment at your leisure with theatre, interactive shows and live music to pick and choose from depending on your mood. There are also some basic inclusions such as Basic Wi-Fi and gratuities on all services, even spa treatments. I felt that, for those on a budget or who aren’t into drinking too much, the cost was competitive and offered good value for what I got in return and I’d be more than happy to sail with the cruise line all over again! What isn’t included with Virgin Voyages? While there is over $600 of inclusions already covered in your cruise fare when you book a Virgin Voyages sailing, there are some things which aren’t included: Alcoholic drinks, speciality coffees and other hot drinks, smoothies and milkshakes: These aren’t included as standard and prices vary depending on what you order. You can pre-load a Bar Tab which is Virgin Voyages version of a drinks package to spend on these drinks while you sail. Spa treatments and access: These need to be purchased also, with treatments including massages and facials for that perfect bit of ‘me time’. Some fitness classes and workouts: While the group sessions are included, some classes are an added extra for you to experience Tattoo parlour: Yes, Virgin Voyages has its own tattoo studio on-board! But, if you’re planning an appointment ensure you book early as it can fill up early. Shore excursions: Exploring ashore with Virgin Voyages will cost you extra too, with these ranging from experiences such as walking tours to tailored unique packages only available with the cruise line. These can be purchased before boarding through the app. My top tips for cruising with Virgin Voyages You can take alcohol on-board to help save money – Each cabin is allowed two 750ml bottles of wine which must be in your carry-on luggage, not your checked luggage. This is great for those getting-ready drinks or evening tipples on your balcony. Pre-book your dinner reservations – Even if you’re only a small group or a couple, if there are venues you really don’t want to miss out on then I’d recommend you book as slots for popular times can go quickly. Read your ship’s agenda for the next few days as soon as you board – You can only make new bookings after boarding when you’re on the ship and certain shows or fitness classes go fast! Look out for what you like and try to book soon as you can so you don’t miss your chance. Different venues offer different cocktails – When you’re exploring the ship, some venues offer cocktails which are exclusive to them so it’s great to try them while you’re there. I highly recommend the Bees Please from the Dock House – it was one of my favourites! Pre-purchase your Bar Tab – To keep your costs in check and even gain some extra $s, pre-purchase your Bar Tab. Virgin Voyages sometimes offer between $50 and $100 extra ‘loot’ to spend for doing so and you can start spending as soon as you board. 11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins

11 Unusual Cruise Ship Cabins View Balcony Cruise Deals A cruise ship cabin is an important factor of your sailing, whether you’re a serial suite booker or a lover of inside staterooms. There are many staterooms to choose from when it comes to booking your cruise, but which are the most unusual? Here are 11 of our favourite places to rest your head which are a little out of the ordinary. Zipline Balcony Oasis of the Seas Featured in Balcony cabins which overlook the Boardwalk neighbourhood on-board Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, passengers not only get to stay in the industry’s first in-facing balconies but also gain fantastic views of the zipline as fellow cruisers fly nine decks above them! AquaTheater Suite Oasis-Class ships Only available on the Oasis Class ships the AquaTheater Suites offer up to eight guests a large space to unwind. Their key feature, and the reason they are named ‘AquaTheater Suites’, is that they boasts a huge wraparound balcony with views to the AquaTheater and surroundings. MSC Zoe Fleetwide MSC Cruises’ latest addition of Zoe is the first-of-its-kind. Featured in all cabins aboard MSC Bellissima, and soon to be fleetwide, the assistant is able to answer hundreds of questions about life on-board, help with excursion and restaurant reservations, as well as answering a huge range of unique customer queries. So far, she can answer 800 questions in seven languages and 30 different accents across the globe. But she doesn’t stop there. Her artificial intelligence means she is continually expanding her knowledge and offering a more personalised experience for passengers. She can offer instant information about cruise events, entertainment, journey updates or just playing music to get ready to. Virtual Balcony Symphony, Harmony, Spectrum, Anthem, Ovation, Quantum, Navigator, Explorer and Voyager of the Seas Featuring an 80-inch high-definition screen which spans almost floor to ceiling, Royal Caribbean’s Virtual Balconies are a unique and contemporary way to view the world outside without having to book an ocean view or balcony. The staterooms offer a real-time view of the ocean and destinations streamed from either the front or back of the ship, depending on which way your room is facing. There’s even sound added for effect, curtains and a virtual balcony rail to offer a ‘real feel’ to your inside cabin. The whole balcony can be switched off if guests wish, but it adds a great perspective on outside weather and give a new dimension to the cabin. Edge Stateroom with Infinite Balcony Edge-Class ships Offering 27% more space than staterooms on the rest of the fleet, Celebrity Cruises’ innovative Edge Staterooms with Infinite Balcony are one-of-a-kind. The unique factor is the balcony, which has a window operated from a control panel to extend the stateroom and bring the outside in. When the bi-fold doors and window is open, the space is great and really opens up your stateroom within a truly transformational setting. These staterooms are exclusively available on-board Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, and any future Edge-Class ships. Ultimate Family Suite Symphony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas Exactly as described, this suite is the ultimate must for families wanting fun memories! Jam-packed with a huge TV, air-hockey table, LEGO wall, hot tub and even a slide that connects the upper level with the ground it’s the perfect place to hang out and enjoy each other’s company while cruising. There’s only two bedrooms, one for the parents and one for kids which sleeps four. There is also a sofa bed in the living room which sleeps two, so the total number to stay in this suite is up to eight. Ben & Jerrys ‘Sweet’ Freedom-Class ships A stateroom that includes free ice cream sounds like a dream, but it’s a reality on-board Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class ships (Independence, Liberty and Freedom of the Seas). Stateroom 6305 is Promenade Stateroom with a difference, overlooking the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream shop with two cows prominently displayed in the window. Aptly named the Ben & Jerry’s ‘Sweet’, the cruise line plays on the unusual view with perks such as daily complimentary ice cream for each guest; access to the Concierge Lounge; and reservations for the ice show. Within the room décor mirror bovine-themes with cow artwork, trinkets, and cow print soft furnishings for a truly unique stateroom to enjoy! Edge Villa Edge-Class ships Designed for the Edge-Class, these suites offer an exciting new category of staterooms for guests to enjoy. The unusual offering is that the Edge Villa is set across two floors, with private plunge pools and floor-to-ceiling windows as well as an expanse of 739 square feet of space! Though Celebrity Cruises aren’t the first cruise line to offer two-storey suites, the Edge Villas are styled to a contemporary level and include exclusive access to The Retreat; their own butler; a premium beverage package; unlimited speciality dining; and high-speed internet access. Sea Terrace Fleetwide Featured on-board brand-new cruise line, Virgin Voyages, all the staterooms are unique and unusual. However, the Sea Terrace stands out with its Roomy Rainshower and hand-woven terrace hammock as well as plenty other quirky features that you wouldn’t usually find in a typical balcony room. The rain showers offer a spa-like wash while the hammocks are hand-woven by artisans from Yellow Leaf – a social enterprise that fosters women’s empowerment and community transformation in rural Thailand. The stateroom features clever lighting with sensors that auto-adjust according to movements and changes between the day and night and there are PIR presence sensors which automatically switch to energy-saving mode when the cabin is empty. Lanai Stateroom Amsterdam, Maasdam, Rotterdam, Veendam and Volendam ships The Lanai stateroom offers a roomy cruise experience on-board selected ships in the Holland America Line fleet. What makes these unique is the sliding door which leads directly into the walk-around Lower Promenade Deck, with instant access to reserved deck chairs to enjoy the stunning views at your leisure. Privacy is not compromised either as the glass for the sliding doors is one-way, so no one can peer into your stateroom when passing by. From virtual balconies to digital assistants, cruising offers a great range of places to stay and relax. If you’re looking for something unusual to book for your next cruise, these 11 staterooms are definitely some of our top picks! Have you stayed in any of these cruise ship cabins? Why you should cruise the Mediterranean in winter

Why you should cruise the Mediterranean in winter

Why you should cruise the Mediterranean in winter View Mediterranean Cruise Deals [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There’s a great deal to be said for cruising the Mediterranean in the winter months. While I love a sea day under the hot summer sunshine as much as the next person, queuing for hours to get into popular attractions ashore is not ideal. Wading through a forest of selfie sticks to get the perfect shot is tiresome. If the lure of cruising is exploring the cultural delights of a new port every day, rather than topping up the tan, a low-season voyage could be the perfect solution.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Which cruise lines visit the Mediterranean in winter A fair few cruise lines now offer off-season Mediterranean cruises. Celebrity and MSC Cruises both have ships making year-round circuits of the Mediterranean, while Viking Ocean has a specific Quiet Season Mediterranean series of voyages in November and December, taking in all the popular ports from Rome and Barcelona to Livorno and Dubrovnik. Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Seabourn and Oceania all have eastern Mediterranean sailings well into November, long after the summer crowds have dispersed. Princess Cruises offers an extended Europe season – and there are, of course, any number of world cruise itineraries leaving the UK each January and heading down through the Mediterranean towards the sunshine. You could book the first sector of one of these – Southampton to Athens or Dubai, for example, and dose up on culture along the way.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The benefits of winter Mediterranean cruises Popular European ports take on a different feel off-season. There is a sense that the locals have their cities back. Nobody looks harassed, or tries to sell you anything. On a recent cruise with Viking, we wandered around the Piazza Navona in Rome, snapping pictures of the famous fountains against a moody sky, no tour groups in the foreground. In Cagliari, the capital of Sicily, we had the cobbled old town to ourselves and later pottered around a small market buying honey and olive oil, hearing only Italian voices. Barcelona was even better; we swanned straight into the Sagrada Familia cathedral, normally heaving with visitors, without queuing. In December, it was just warm enough for a glass of wine and some tasty tapas outside in a pretty square at lunchtime. The list goes on; imagine Dubrovnik if you are on the only ship in port, with the path around the city’s ramparts all to yourself. Or Venice in misty November, so much more beautiful and atmospheric than in steamy August.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] But what about the weather? Of course, you do take a gamble on the weather by cruising off season. We certainly had some windy days, but in the Mediterranean, strong winds can kick up at any time of year. In November and December, it is generally too chilly to dine on deck and you might not spend much time on your balcony – but maybe that’s a good reason to save money and for once, not book a balcony cabin. Picking a ship that has enough to keep you amused in cool weather cruising is important; a vessel with a covered pool, for example. Colder weather can even be a bonding experience; on my recent cruise, there was quite the party spirit in the hot tubs every evening as we left port (until it was time to get out and brave the chill).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The main factor is to pick a smart itinerary that covers plenty of options for inclement weather. After all, if you have always wanted to visit the Acropolis Museum in Athens, or the Uffizi in Florence, or the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, without the crowds, it really doesn’t matter if the skies outside are grey. Eastern Mediterranean: What to see and where to cruise

Eastern Mediterranean: What to see and where to cruise

Eastern Mediterranean: What to see and where to cruise View All Mediterranean Cruises The Eastern Mediterranean extends from Venice through the Ionian Sea to the Aegean; the Turkish coast and further south; the shores of Israel, Cyprus and Lebanon; represents the greatest concentration of historical interest in the cruising world. In a single voyage you could see the iconic antiquities of Jerusalem, Athens, Delos, Olympia and Ephesus. Or you could squeeze through the Corinth Canal on a smaller ship, learn about Theseus and the Minotaur in the Palace of Knossos on Crete, gaze up at the chunky castle of the Knights of St John at Lindos, and look for Game of Thrones shooting locations from the ramparts of Dubrovnik. This is also a region of great natural beauty with tremendous variety, from the pebbly beaches and crystal clear waters of Croatia, to the towering black cliffs of volcanic Santorini and the softer hills and cypress groves of the Ionian. Mixing culture with beach time and watersports is easy; Mykonos has gorgeous beaches, for example, or you could join a sea kayaking excursion in Dubrovnik, or snap a selfie on the famous Shipwreck Beach on Kefalonia.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Choose your route So how do you choose a route? Typically, an eastern Mediterranean fly-cruise would sail Venice-Athens, or round trip from either, or Rome-Athens (taking in part of the western Med as well). Plenty of lines offer fly-cruises from Venice, among them Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Cruises, MSC Cruises, P&O Cruises, Cunard and Celebrity Cruises. You can get a long way south and east without flying, too; P&O Cruises offers several Greek Islands cruises from Southampton, including a couple in the school holidays. Typically, in just over a fortnight, you will sail all the way to Rhodes, also visiting Athens, Mykonos and Katakolon. A few ships still call at Istanbul, which used to offer a dramatic end to a meander through the region, but most lines are steering clear until the security situation is more stable. A lot still visit Kusadasi, though, which is the jumping off point for the antiquities at Ephesus and remains one of the big bucket-list ports of the eastern Med, the others being Venice, Santorini, Rhodes, Athens, Dubrovnik and Kotor. The temporary demise of Turkey has led to a surge in popularity of Croatia and, by default, Montenegro, as the gorgeous old medieval town of Kotor, perched at the end of a long and spectacular fjord, is an easy hop from Dubrovnik. As a rule of thumb, the smaller the ship, the more adventurous the itinerary, so on a smaller vessel exploring Croatia, expect to see elegant coastal towns like Split and Zadar, or Korcula encircled by ramparts. There is a fashion for more in-depth exploration nowadays as cruisers seek more adventurous experiences on board expeditions cruises or more excursion focused itineraries. This idea of late sailings and overnights in port is a pleasing development in Mediterranean cruising and should be taken advantage of. If there is one place you want to be in port for ‘magic hour’, that golden time either side of sunset, it is the Greek islands, Italy or Croatia. Cunard Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises are among the big ship cruise lines offering more overnights on their Mediterranean itineraries, while Azamara both keep their mid-sized ships in port till late at night. The far eastern reaches of the Mediterranean, Jerusalem and Galilee, are high on many cruisers’ priority lists but are, of course, more subject to political volatility than anywhere else on the cruising map. Israel is certainly seeing a resurgence and cruise lines visiting include Celebrity, Cunard, P&O Cruises, Oceania, Seabourn, Azamara, Viking Ocean and Holland America, although more in the shoulder season months than the baking midsummer. See thge best of Egypt as you visit Cairo and the Pyramids from the Mediterranean port of Alexandria. You are most likely to venture here if you book a segment of a world cruise on board Fred. Olsen or Viking Ocean or a repositioning cruise to the Middle East, another region growing in popularity; luxury lines Crystal and Silversea both offer sailings from the eastern Med to Dubai.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] When to visit So when should you visit? Peak season for the Eastern Mediterranean is June to September but July and August, the busiest months, are not necessarily the best as temperatures are punishing and crowds can be overwhelming. If you are cruising with children in the school holidays, do build in plenty of beach stops and (dare we say this?), in more challenging ports like Athens, with young children in tow, you could even consider staying on-board instead of traipsing round the antiquities. You will have the pool to yourself. May and June are particularly pleasant, as is mid-September onwards, right up until November. A couple of lines, namely MSC Cruises and Viking Ocean, offer wonderful off-season eastern Med cruises, too, sailing right through the winter, which means you can prowl the alleyways of Venice or take in the magnificent Acropolis without the crowds.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Eastern Mediterranean cruises encompass history, culture and natural beauty. Perfect for relaxation as a couple, a family or even a solo traveller, these cruise holidays will pique your curiosity and help you return home full of wonder.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]View All Mediterranean Cruises

Ultimate Guide to European Cruises

Ultimate Guide to European Cruises

Ultimate Guide to European Cruises View Europe Cruises Cruises around Europe are by far one of the most popular choices for UK cruisers. Europe is a fantastic holiday destination with so much to do and see for cruisers of all ages – whether you are heading to the blissful Mediterranean, breath-taking Norway and Northern Europe or the Scandinavian delights of the Baltics, a cruise is by far the best mode of transport. With no other holiday do you get to explore so much in one trip! With all that being said, it can be difficult to know exactly what you want from a European cruise – after all, with so much on offer it can be hard to choose. Inevitably, there will be better options for families at some destinations and couples at others – so it is important to know what you are looking for. That is where we come in. This guide to European cruises will cover everything you need to know – from the best time to go on a European cruise, to the must-see destinations and cruise lines. When is the Best Time for a European Cruise? The best time for a European cruise will of course vary depending on which part of Europe you intend to travel to. Luckily each destination tends to have its peak season which helps to guide you on the best time to travel. For Mediterranean cruises, the peak travel time – the weather is warm, the water is pristine, and the cities are bustling. For families, this is likely the best time to travel as there is ample time off school to take advantage of. However, for couples or families with children not at school we recommend travelling in spring or autumn to avoid the rush. For Baltic cruises, you again should aim for slightly warmer months. Baltic cruises run all year-round however the poor weather in winter is less desirable. Therefore, the best travel months are July, August and September. For Northern Europe, such as Iceland and Norway the best travel time is again June through August – if you are looking for sun that is. If you are looking to see the northern lights, the best time is between October and March. Best European Cruise Lines We work with a variety of cruise lines that operate in Europe, and they are all special in their own way. The best cruise line for you will depend on different factors, but we have rounded them up below. Best for Families Royal Caribbean Norwegian Cruise Line MSC Cruises Princess Cruises Carnival Cruises P&O Cruises Best for Couples Celebrity Cruises NCL Princess Cruises MSC Cruises Royal Caribbean Fred. Olsen Cunard Cruises Holland America Line Best for Solo Travellers Fred. Olsen Holland America Line NCL Departure Ports for European Cruises We offer a variety of departure ports for our European cruises with a great deal of them departing from and arriving in Southampton or Portsmouth– for those who want the ease of starting and ending their trip in the UK. If you would prefer to depart from another European country, and perhaps enjoy some time there, we also depart from ports such as Barcelona, Copenhagen and Gran Canaria. Top European Cruise Destinations Europe is vast and offers completely unique experiences depending on where you travel – from the sandy coasts of the Mediterranean to the snowy fjords of Norway. The Mediterranean It won’t shock you that the Mediterranean is by far one of the most popular cruising destinations. It is incredibly vast and offers a range of different experiences – from historical sites across Greece and Rome, to the shopping destinations of Barcelona, Milan and Paris. You can sun yourself in France, Spain, Italy right across to Turkey on a Mediterranean Cruise. Mediterranean cruises make a great choice for families, couples and solo travellers alike as there really is something for everyone. Northern Europe Further north you will find the stunning landscape that is Norway. Sail through the famous fjords and take in the spectacular views of natural beauty. Even better, on these trips Iceland will often be included so you can admire the majestic towns and cities formed by volcanic eruptions. Northern Europe cruises are fantastic for couples and solo travellers as they offer the perfect chance to see some new sights. The Baltics Cruises to the Baltics offer rich culture and history in some of the most beautiful towns and cities. On these trips you will be able to visit the likes of Latvia, Denmark. However, there may be some other things you want to do to prepare for your trip. Read up on Destinations One of the best things about going to so many places is seeing all the sites. So, we recommend reading up on the places you will be visiting and deciding exactly what you want to do and see whilst you’re there – so you don’t feel like you have missed anything. You can of course join excursions with your cruise line and take tours at each destination or you can do your own thing if there is something specific you want to do. We would recommend thinking about this in advance so that you are prepared. Prepare your Documents One of the most important aspects of preparing for any holiday, but specifically a cruise, is making sure you have all of your documents to hand, and they are all in date. These will now include Covid-19 documentation. Make sure you have: Passport Travel Insurance Cruise Boarding Passes Any Airline Tickets Luggage Tags You can check with your specific cruise line about any additional, and specific documentation you might need.
